World History Section 3, Unit 2 Ancient Egypt Activity
3
Objectives Use prior knowledge of Ancient Egypt to identify what items have in common. Participate in class discussion about the significance of ancient Egyptian inventions. Research about a specific Egyptian scientific or technological contribution and teach others about it. Prepare three quiz questions about that contribution. Compare and contrast the usefulness of Egyptian inventions versus todays modern ones.
4
Question Consider the following items: Honey Glassware Paper Calendar
Newspaper Cosmetics “Medicine” What do all of these products have in common?
5
Answer All of these items were made by the Ancient Egyptians.
Let’s go a bit further and watch a brief video on the inventions of the Egyptians– how the Pyramids were Made! Post-Video Question: Why does the achievement of the Ancient Egyptians matter?
6
Activity What we are going to do in this activity (which should take about three days), is study a specific topic related to Egypt, in this case, inventions or scientific achievements. The goal of this assignment is to understand the long term impact of Egypt on cultures that followed it--- even today!
7
Activity At this point, you will need the Egypt’s Golden Empire Project Guide. Once you have the guide, please look over it carefully. We will talk about it as a group. This guide provides plenty of resources on where to research.
8
Activity Now that you have the guide, I’m going to begin passing out topics. In this box, I have several different inventions created by the Ancient Egyptians. You and a partner are going to take one invention and– using the guide– complete research.
9
Key Points You must research this invention following the guide questions. At the end of your research, you must come up with three multiple choice questions about your invention– you will submit these questions to me. You have to present your findings– I have posters available (see pg. 2 in your guide for instructions).
10
Outcomes At the end of this activity, you will be answering questions about each team’s invention. That means that you must be paying attention to any presentation.
11
Research With this, you all will begin researching your specific invention. Let’s go down to the computer lab (you should take a notebook to keep track of information).
12
Presentations When someone is presenting, please:
Be quiet and respectful Give your full attention Ask questions by raising your hand
13
Closure Activity As we saw in the presentations, many of the scientific and technological contributions made by the ancient Egyptians are still used today. While they have been perfected and improved, the basic idea is still there– 3,000 years after. On a separate piece of paper, I want you to think of one invention we have today that you believe could still exist 3,000 years from now. Be prepared to discuss.
14
Review Objectives Use prior knowledge of Ancient Egypt to identify what items have in common. Participate in class discussion about the significance of ancient Egyptian inventions. Research about a specific Egyptian scientific or technological contribution and teach others about it. Prepare three quiz questions about that contribution.
