Gifted Program Overview
Gifted services provide instruction in the core content areas of language arts, social studies, science and math. Instruction is provided at an accelerated pace around an essential question that leads students to more complex levels of understanding.

Instructional Design Conceptual Knowledge Traditional Gifted
Concepts, generalizations, principles, theories Procedural Knowledge Skills and strategies of the discipline In general, classroom instruction at school begins with teaching children facts. Then we move into teaching skills and strategies, and finally, when possible, we move children to develop concepts, generalizations, principles, and theories. For the majority of students, instruction is mostly provided in the factual and procedural levels. Because gifted children think differently, it is important that we spend more time at the conceptual level and often even begin our instruction here and then fill in the facts or procedures that can help us take understanding further. An example of this might be how we teach students about the water cycle. They learn evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Then we would move students into studying more about the discipline of meteorology and talk about weather caused by the water cycle. However, when moving students to the conceptual level, we would talk about cycles in general and think about examples of different kinds of cycles, clarify our thinking by thinking about items that are not cycles, and this would lead students to make generalizations about cycles. Then the study of cycles would lead to principles and theories. In gifted classrooms, we would try to start with the concept of cycles and unpack what cycles really are. Then students can make connections between the water cycle, that they are learning about, other cycles, generalizations, theories, and principles. Factual Knowledge Dates, times, people, elements, vocabulary

Curriculum and Instruction . . .
Allow students to spend more time on high levels of questioning and discussion rather than spending time gaining factual information. Begin with big ideas, use of sophisticated note-taking tools, self-directed learning options, and varied instructional methods. Allow students to work as a disciplinarians in the discipline, framing questions, generating ideas and multiple perspectives, researching to find hypotheses, analyzing the hypotheses and presenting conclusions. Provide sophisticated levels of complexity by using more divergent and analytical questions, aligning instruction with the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and focusing on broad concepts that relate to multiple content areas. Focus on advanced concepts and complex ideas, which requires that curriculum be adapted or extended to meet students’ needs.

Gifted Middle School Program Language Arts/Social Studies
6th Grade Gifted Language Arts/Issues in US History 7th Grade Gifted Language Arts/World History 8th Grade Gifted Language Arts/ Foundations of Civilization and Human Geography In Math, students are afforded the opportunity to move to the level of math that meets their needs, thus we have many students who are working several grade levels above their grade of enrollment. Access to higher level LA and SS works differently, and therefore we want to ensure students have access to a more challenging path with this curriculum as well. You will see in the GHSP curriculum that students again have choices for LA in the IB Program, so the MS scope will mirror that. 9th Grade Gifted 9th Grade English Gifted AP World History
