Engineering Welcome To Our
Let’s learn to explore our curiosity, become critical thinkers, work together as critical thinkers and solve some world problems!
2
CHAMPS for our Presentation
Conversation Voice Level is 0 during the lesson/Voice Level 1 during Partner Time Help Questions are strongly encourage. Feel free raise your hand if you have a question. Activity We will learn the importance of engineering and learn how to have fun being creative, collaborative, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. Movement Please stay seated. You will walk during transitions. Participation We will be active listeners during the lesson and then time to interact at your tables. Success You will leave here with new engineering knowledge and skills.

What is S.T.E.M.? S.T.E.M. education emphasizes the using your knowledge in real-life situations. A S.T.E.M class is typically based around finding a solution to a real-world problem.
4
In our modern world, challenges are everywhere!
How can we waste less? How can we build smarter and safer cars and trains... better roads and bridges? How do we understand the functioning of our brains? 50 minutes These are big ideas that engineers and scientists work on to help improve the world we live in.
5
Today’s S.T.E.M. focus will be learning about how to be Engineers.
Engineering is the science or profession of developing and using nature's power and resources in ways that are useful to people.
6
Who are engineers? Engineers are people who solve problems and focus on making things work more efficiently and effectively. Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems.
7
What is the Difference Between a Scientist and an Engineer?
Uses knowledge of math and science to create something new Characteristic activity: creative design Work in disciplines such as: Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering A practitioner of engineering is an engineer Scientist: Develops knowledge from analysis and study Characteristic activity: research Work in fields such as: Biology Chemistry Physics A practitioner of science is a scientist Obtained from Wikipedia under science and engineering

What is the Difference Between a Scientist and an Engineer?
Scientists discover the world that exists; engineers create the world that never was.” Theodore Von- Karman, Aerospace Engineer
9
Engineering of the Past
Evidence that engineering was practiced more than 4,500 years ago:
10
Engineering Today What are engineers working on today? Alpine Mega Tunnel – a 95 mile tunnel through the Swiss Alps – the longest tunnel in the world Perdido Spar (Shell Oil) – worlds deepest oil well. Located in more than 9,000 feet of water, 2 miles off the coast of Texas
11
Engineers are Everywhere!
Orbiting in space Designing bridges Designing cars Exploring the ocean Creating soles for your sneakers Developing your next favorite candy bar.
12
Engineering Disciplines
Electrical Engineers Work with electricity, electromagnetic fields, and light Design products such as cell phones, computers, antennas, televisions, and appliances Design power generation and distribution systems Mechanical Engineers Work with machines and systems that involve the production and use of heat Design cars, heating and air conditioning systems, and manufacturing systems Biomedical Engineers Work with the mechanical and chemical properties of the human body Design prosthetic devices and medical diagnostic systems
13
Engineering Disciplines
Civil Engineers Work with physics and materials Design buildings, roads, bridges, storm water systems Chemical Engineers Work with physics, chemistry and biology Design medicines, fertilizers, semiconductors, food additives (such as flavorings) Aerospace Engineers Work with aerodynamics, propulsion and navigation Design aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, missiles, and rockets There are many more disciplines!
14
What does it take to be an Engineer?
You don’t have to be a genius to be an Engineer… People who become Engineers: Are CURIOUS about how things work Solve interesting life problems Design and experiment Calculate using math and science Work with others as a team
15
Why be an Engineer? Fun Lots of Job Opportunities
Great variety in your work You get to build or improve things You get to use your creative ideas to solve problems You get to work on a team Lots of Job Opportunities Engineers are in high demand There are more engineering jobs than engineers Your Education Continues You will need to continue studying to remain relevant Any other ideas here????
16
Why be an Engineer? Earning Potential
Engineers earn one of the highest salaries of any career with a 4 or 5-year degree From the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2012): Occupation Average Salary Electrical Engineer $87,920 Mechanical Engineer $80,580 Biomedical Engineer $86,960 Civil Engineer $79,340 Chemical Engineer $94,350 Aerospace Engineer $103,720 Any other ideas here????
17
How do you become an Engineer?
STAY IN SCHOOL! If it was easy, everyone would be an engineer DO WELL IN SCHOOL! GRADUATE! Any other ideas here????
18
Engineer Challenges These ideas will help us:
Today, we are going to work in partners to solve some engineering challenges! These ideas will help us: Spark creativity and imagination Stimulate our minds Collaborate with others Promote problem solving
19
Lego Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use task cards to build and create with Legos. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
20
Play Doh Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Using the suggested famous landmarks, build structures using Play Doh. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
21
IO Blocks Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use task cards to build and create with IO Blocks. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
22
Power Clix Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use directions manual to build and create with Power Clix Magnets. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
23
Angry Bird Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use task cards to build and create Angry Bird scene. One person makes the scene while the other is the launcher. You can only launch the bird(s) on the card (some cards repeat the bird). Switch roles and play the same card again so each person gets a try. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
24
Little Bits Challenge Directions Partner voice only (Level1)
Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use direction manual the create different inventions using electronic building blocks. Only use the materials that are out. Only do challenges that are less than 5 minutes. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
25
Joinks and Interlox Challenge
Directions Partner voice only (Level1) Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use the provided building materials and create fun structures. You do not have to follow any task cards. (you can solve your own, made-up problem). This is a free building activity. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
26
Engineering Challenges
Steps To Follow Collaboratively work in pairs to solve the task card. First, identify the problem. Next, discuss how to solve the problem. Thirdly, make a plan to share the workload. Then solve the problem. At the end (when you are done), reflect on how you could solve it differently next time.
