Propaganda A recurring theme in propaganda was the consequences of careless talk. Prop. That made people think something horrible would happen to them is fear. “Everyone is doing it, so should you too!” describes bandwagon propaganda.

Propaganda Propaganda was intended to recruit soldiers, finance the war, and unify the public behind the war effort Prop. That used words to replace other words to sound better was called euphemism The Office of War Information (OWI) was responsible for the creation of WWII propaganda

Unbroken Louie Zamperini came from an Italian family
His brother Pete convinced their principal to let Louie join the track team In the 1936 Olympics, Louie set an Olympic record and beat Don Lash.

Unbroken While stranded on a raft with 2 other men, Louie killed two different albatrosses (birds) for food. Altogether they were stuck on the raft for 47 days.

Unbroken The cruel Japanese guard at the POW camp was called “The Bird.” The Japanese made Louie run against one of their runners to break his spirit. Louie got to use a radio to send a message to his parents.

Unbroken Louie’s friend Harris was brutally beaten because the guards found maps he had been drawing. The Japanese were given the order to kill all the prisoners if the war should end. The POWs left their camp via a train station. Following the war, many veterans suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Farewell to Manzanar In 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked.
When Jeanne’s family saw the ships returning, they knew something was wrong. Later, the FBI picked up Jeanne’s father. The family was given 48 hours notice to clear out of their home.

Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne’s mother was forced to sell her China set.
“It cannot be helped” is the translation of “Shikata ga nai.” “Animals live like this” is what Jeanne’s mother said when the family had to cover the walls with scrap lumber. Typhoid shots and the camp food make Jeanne constantly sick.

Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne calls open toilets, packed sleeping quarters, and communal mess halls “open insults.” Mealtime was the family scene center before Manzanar. Jeanne’s 7th grade paper topic was how the family would hunt grunion before the war.

Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne chose her paper topic because she knew she’d never be able to do it again. Jeanne says the camp is her birthplace as it is an ending place for her father. “Inu” means “dog.” Papa is called “inu” for helping the army.

Farewell to Manzanar The December Riot happened exactly 1 year after Pearl Harbor. The riot was caused by the arrest of a young cook. Jeanne’s high school yearbook was called “Our World.” Senior pictures were accompanied by the names of the schools they would have graduated from.

Farewell to Manzanar Baton twirling was an activity Jeanne that she tried when she went back to school. Ancestors are honored at an obon festival. Hiroshima’s bombing closed the camps down. Jeanne speaking English amazed the little girl in class.

Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne said that once you stopped seeing people as individuals, deporting them was easy. If asked on a date, Jeanne would be horrified by her father’s behavior. Her father would be angry if she dated a Caucasian.

Farewell to Manzanar In her senior year, Jeanne was named Carnival Queen. Jeanne returned to Manzanar 30 years later. Jeanne and her family deal with the memories by not talking about Manzanar. When she returns to Manzanar, Jeanne finds everything gone.
