Hand tool-a tool operated by hand to do work Power tool-a tool operated by some source other than human power Layout tool-tool used to measure or mark wood, metal and other materials Saw-tool used to cut wood or other materials Boring tool-any device used for drilling a hole

3 Layout tool (tape measure)

4 Cross Cut Hand Saw Used for cutting across the grain.
8 to 12 teeth per inch. The more teeth per inch the smoother the cut.

5 Rip Handsaw Used to cut with the grain of the wood.
5 to 7 teeth per inch. We do not have a rip saw in the shop.

6 Back Saw Has a thin blade with fine teeth with a heavy piece of steel fitted over the back to prevent it from buckling. Used to make flat bottom cuts such as, dado cuts and rabbit cuts. Only cuts on the forward stroke.

7 Key Hole or Compass Saw Used mostly for cutting holes in sheet rock/dry wall

8 Coping Saw Used for cutting inside or outside curves.
Small blade will make sharp curves. Can take blade off and put through a hold to cut out holes. Cuts on forward stroke.

9 Hole Saw Used to cut holes in boards. Sizes range from ¾” to 5” plus.
Use with low speed. Works best to cut part way through and then cut from other side.

10 Hacksaw Used to cut metal. Only cuts on forward stroke.

11 Driving tool-tool used to move another tool or object

12 Hammer- tool used for driving other implements and hardware

13 Pliers Pliers-tool used to grip wood, plastic, metal and other materials

14 Wrench Wrench-used to turn nuts, bolts, or screws

15 Chisel Chisel-used to cut wood, metal and masonry products

16 Punch Punch-used to align holes to insert a pin or to make a dent in metal to start a drill or to set a nail below wood

17 Clamp Clamp-used to draw and hold objects together

18 Wrecking tool Wrecking tool-used as pry bars to pry apart boards that are nailed together

19 Digging Tool Digging tool-any device used to turn up, loosen or remove earth

20 Fastener Fastener-any device used to hold 2 or more pieces of material together or in place

21 Laminate Laminate-to fasten 2 or more pieces together with an adhesive

22 Adhesive Adhesive-sticky substance such as glue

23 Nail Nail-fastener that is driven into the material it holds

24 terms Diameter-the distance across the center of a round object
Penny-the unit of measure used to designate the length of most nails Galvanized-coated with zinc

25 Shank Shank- the long stem part of a nail or screw

26 Head Head-the enlarged part on the top of a nail or screw

27 Screw Screw-a fastener with threads that bite into the material it fastens

28 Threads Threads-the grooves of even shape and taper the wrap continuously around a shank or hole

29 terms Square head-has 4 equal sides Hex head-has 6 equal sides
Slotted head screw-requires standard screw driver shaped like a - sign Phillips head screw-requires a Philips screw driver shaped like a + sign Allen screw-requires a allen head or hex head wrench Torx (star) head screw- requires a * looking wrench to install Drywall screw-has a flat phillips head with a very thin shank

30 terms Machine bolt-fastener with a square or hex head with threads on just the last 1 inch (or more) of the shank Cap screw-same as machine bolt except threads run the entire length of the shank Carriage bolt-fastener with a round head over square shoulders used in wood Stove bolt-round headed bolt with a straight screwdriver slot Plow bolt-has a square tapered head when placed in a hole designed for a plow bolt Nut-device with a threaded hole for a bolt thread into Washer-flat device with a hole in the center

31 terms Machine screw-a small bolt with a hex nut
Hardware-used in ag mechanics for special fasteners

32 Hinge Hinge-object that pivots a door or other object to swing back and forth or up and down

33 Butt Hinge Butt hinges-used to mount doors in a butted position

34 Strap Hinge Strap hinge-much longer than they are high

35 T Hinge T hinge-made by combining the features of the butt hinge and strap hinge
