4 Our global success number 28 among the best young universities in the world (Times Higher Education 150 Under ranking 2016) number 2 among Nordic business schools (Financial Times, European Business Schools 2015 Special Report) number 14 in the world in collaboration between the university and industries (CWTS Leiden Industry Collaboration 2015) number 3 in bachelor’s programmes in fashion in the world (Business of Fashion, Global Fashion School Rankings 2016) There are between 17,000–22,000 universities in the world, about 1,000 in Europe, about 70 in the Nordic area and 14 in Finland. Universities are often compared by rankings which are based on criteria that differ significantly from one another. Typically, the universities that succeed in overall rankings are those that have received a Nobel prize at some point or that have published a large number of scientific articles. Because of publication practices, the universities that do well in the rankings are those that teach medicine or the natural sciences. Aalto University specialises in technology, business and art, and collaboration with companies is important for the university. That is why the rankings that are the most relevant for Aalto are the sector or subject specific rankings.

5 Our task is to identify and solve major challenges facing society at large
The key areas of research help to make Finland more competitive, produce wellbeing and promote the creation of new innovations. In its research, Aalto University focuses on four fundamental competence areas with three integrative multidisciplinary themes. The key areas help to make Finland more competitive, produce wellbeing and promote the creation of new innovations. Close links with companies and other partners ensure the effectiveness of our research.

6 We educate game changers
Aalto University produces experts possessing the knowledge and skills required for building a sustainable society. Tackling the major challenges affecting society at large and creating wellbeing require disciplinary excellence combining creativity, multidisciplinary collaboration and entrepreneurship. It comprises entrepreneurship training (including the Aalto Ventures Program), accelerators (Startup Sauna, Startup Center), student-driven entrepreneurship communities (the Aaltoes, which organises the Slush events), actors commercialising research results, and product development environments (Design Factory).

8 New openings in teaching
Updated, more clearly structured and more extensive bachelor's and master's programmes Optional minors outside the student's field of study Novel learning environments, such as Design Factory ‘A unique concentration in which something is happening all the time has grown around Design Factory and Startup Sauna.’ Pyry Taanila designer and entrepreneur

10 ‘I believe that the forest industry will save the Finnish economy – once again. With new innovations, the range of products that can be processed from wood will keep expanding. We can already make for example thread, clothes and, say, edible single-use dishes from wood.’ Katja Kortelainen Master of Science in Bioproduct Technology

11 Innovation through collaboration
The environmentally friendly Ioncell F method will boost cotton recycling. A revolutionary invention in heat conduction enables super powerful quantum computers. Finland’s first satellite was developed by students. Heat conduction A research group led by Mikko Möttönen succeeded in transporting heat ten thousand times further than ever before. As a result of this discovery, the development of quantum computers can take a giant leap forward. Recycled fibre Ioncell F, a process revolutionising cotton recycling has won the H&M Global Change Award. The environmentally friendly technology is a result of cooperation between chemistry, forest products technology and textile experts. Aalto-1 satellite Finland’s first satellite was developed by students. The new-generation satellite involves technological innovations, the results of which can also be used in other fields.
