E.g. war, unemployment, natural disasters, corrupt governments etc. Give a quote to show the poor have a responsibility to help themselves. ‘The one who is unwilling to work will not eat’ OR ‘Go to the ant you sluggard. Consider its ways and be wise.’ Explain briefly what is meant by the term ‘positive discrimination’ and give an example. Why are people poor? Why are people poor?
Other points to ensure are on pupil’s mind maps: Born in poor country – LEDC where there is corrupt government or have been exploited by MEDCs. Disability preventing them from working, caring for disabled loved one, lost money because of war, natural disasters, redundancy. Bad decisions. Lack of skills/education. Drug & alcohol addiction. Poor budgeting skills. Unwise spending. Failure to prepare for retirement. 5

Exploitation of the poor
What does the term exploitation mean? Exploitation: misuse of power or money to get others to do things for little or unfair reward. Dictionary Corner Ask students to either look up the definitions in the dictionary or come up with their own. What does exploitation of the poor mean? Exploitation of the poor: unfair pay, human trafficking, excessive interest on loans.

Group task Investigate one way in which poor people can be exploited. Create a news report to raise awareness of this problem. Include: Definition Examples Facts Why is this exploitation? What can be done to stop it? You will be reporting LIVE in 15 minutes! Challenge – include an interview with somebody who has experienced this type of exploitation. Students need to fill in their given section of the worksheet with their research before they create their news report. They will fill out the rest of the sheet when they listen to the other news report presentations. 8

Unfair Pay Factsheet Definition: Employers paying less than the minimum wage to their workers. Approximately 200,000 people in tea plantations in West Bengal, India, are paid less than £1 a day – half the minimum wage. Workers are often also forced to endure poor conditions eg long hours – 16 per day, 7 days a week - in unsafe conditions. Sweatshops: terms used for a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. Excessive Interest on Loans
Lenders often target low- income families who can’t get loans from banks; payday short term loans are very attractive but often have huge interest rates. Interest rate may be as much as 1000% or more. British Money Advice Service reported a case where a woman borrowed £500 and ended up owing £88,000 in repayments. People also get themselves into real problems by running up debts on credit cards. Definition: Unsecured loans with a very high rate of interest.
