The Marks of an Obedient Disciple-maker
Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. – Matt 16:24
2
The Marks of an Obedient Disciple-maker
As we looked through the Marks of a True Believer, we learned that being a believer involved a life changing event that ushered in a life of submission to a wonderful Lord and Savior. We were challenged to take His yoke upon our shoulders and become a slave to Christ. It is not possible to do this without recognizing that being a slave of Christ requires absolute obedience to the One who purchased us with His blood and left us with clear instructions. Those instructions have come to be known as the Great Commission – “Go and make disciples …” So what does obedience to this instruction involve? In this series we will see that our 21st century Western understanding of this task is more than likely flawed or inadequate at best. By examining Jesus in His world, we will expand our understanding of what it means to be a disciple-maker and we will find ourselves challenged by the theme text of this series where Jesus says to us, His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me”. We will come to see that the graphic I chose for the background for the last series still holds – we are to be branches abiding in the vine. My prayer is that the Divine Vine-dresser will prune you and me so that we may bring forth more fruit. Starting Oct 6 9:15am

Rabbis and Disciples
10
The Law and its impact on behavior
.Judaism is a comprehensive way of life, filled with rules and practices that affect every aspect of life: what you do when you wake up in the morning, what you can and cannot eat, what you can and cannot wear, how to groom yourself, how to conduct business, who you can marry, how to observe the holidays and Shabbat, and perhaps most important, how to treat G-d, other people, and animals. Choosing a Rabbi Extracted form a seminar series posted at
12
Choosing a Rabbi What are some of the inherent characteristics of a first century disciple?
13
A radical rabbi Jesus increasingly taught how men ought to think what should be in their heart, what their motivation should be, how they should live not so much to ensure that they were fulfilling the Law, but how they should live in order to bring glory to God and further the aims of the Kingdom of God.
14
A radical change What examples can you give of New Testament disciples’ actions that shows they were putting the Kingdom of God before their own needs and comforts?
15
21 Century Style Disciple-making
G Go to God in prayer daily (John 15:7). R Read God's Word daily (Acts 17:11); begin with the Gospel of John. O Obey God moment by moment (John 14:21). W Witness for Christ by your life and words (Matthew 4:19; John 15:8). T Trust God for every detail of your life (1 Peter 5:7). H Holy Spirit - allow Him to control and empower your daily life and witness (Galatians 5:16,17; Acts 1:8).
16
1st Century Style Disciple-making
Pose questions in such a way that they are not accusatory but rather provoke thought and open the door for the Holy Spirit to continue with a force and power we could only dream about possessing.

MAKING DISCIPLES JESUS’ WAY – NEW PERSPECTIVES
Who should we consider as we make disciples?
19
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

Question for discussion
What changes would be necessary for SALT groups to truly function as a venue for disciple-making and addressing the needs and hurts of group members? Can you identify ways in which your SALT group is already functioning in this way? Php 3: Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Truth Teller The Truth teller is
The parent who is quick to correct and reprimand and slow to compliment and praise The spouse who is always ready with a criticism and seldom acknowledges their partners strengths The employer who hands out improvement critiques without verbally affirming their employees strengths The critical in-law who does not know how to make their child’s spouse feel their love and acceptance One whose very body language and facial expressions communicate their disapproval Often self-focused and self-righteous One whose sees themselves as the guardians of truth and are always ready with a correction Autocratic with a high view of their own righteousness One who dwells on the cost of discipleship without much mention of the joy of discipleship Ready to spoons out black and white advice for those that have complex gray issues in their life – just “stop it” approach
47
Grace Giver The Grace giver Tolerates and never confronts
Preaches only love and warm fuzzies Always tells you that you are doing fine and never addresses your shortcomings Over-uses the term “Good-job” Is afraid to offer constructive criticism Avoids any form of confrontation Is a permissive parent who seldom disciplines or sets limits for their child Allows anything and everything even when some things are not acceptable Sees “not being judgmental” as a strength

Jesus at work asking Probing Questions
As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property. - Mark 10:17-27

62
The Price Jesus paid Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. - Philippians 2:5-8
63
What side of your nature are you nourishing?
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you – Philippians 4:8-9

71
What It Means to Become Slaves of All
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Serving Dying
72
A powerful Christmas promise
The radical call to Christian disciple-making is NOT a call to serve Jesus, but to be served by Jesus as we serve others, and to be ransomed by Him from death
73
Be My Disciples — Don't Serve Me
I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing – John 15:5
74
A Christmas Demand and Promise
He demands your life. All of it He demands that you take on a life-style that sacrifices everything for the sake of serving others He promises to give His life as a ransom for many He promises to serve His disciples — to serve all those who will stop trying to earn his approval by serving him

Surrender to be Served (Part II)
76
This is what Christmas is all about …
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many”. - Mark 10:45
77
Its not about just hard work …
Its about : First being redeemed and Then being surrendered to Him to allow Him to work in and through you
78
Central message … the Son of Man came NOT to be served, but to serve
79
Critical message When you become a Christian—a disciple of Jesus—you do not become His helper. He becomes your helper. You do not become His benefactor. He becomes your benefactor. You do not become His servant. He becomes your servant. - John Piper
80
Apparent contradiction
Paul called himself the "servant of Jesus Christ - Romans 1:1 What’s happening here?
81
There’s more to this message …
Jesus came to give His life as a ransom for many.
82
What Jesus is looking for …
Jesus did not come in search of slave labor. He does not need it. He came in search of those who would become his friends. That is, he came in search of those who would trust him to serve them.
83
How do these two work together?
If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me – Matt 16:24 The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve – Mark 10:45

86
Christ serving us via the Holy Spirit
The third person of the Trinity is to walk with you every minute of the day and empower you to overcome temptation, guide you in paths of righteousness, point you in the direction of the path God has planned for you, provide you with wisdom to handle life’s challenges, and take that which you place at His disposal and amplify its effectiveness beyond what we can imagine.
87

Psa 1:1-3 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! (2) But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. (3) He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
90
Serving others Act 3:6-8 But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene--walk!" (7) And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. (8) With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
91
God equips us to do His will
Heb 13: Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, (21) equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
92
Means of equipping Eph 4: And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, (12) for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; (13) until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
93
Parties mentioned in this verse

94
1Pe 4: As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (11) Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

When it comes to disciple making – are all of these gifts available or necessary?
117
“Open but cautious” view
Three camps Continuationists Cessationists “Open but cautious” view
118
Sources 1) a message by Tom Pennington who holds strongly to the cessationist point of view 2) an paper by John Piper who is a non charismatic continuationist, and 3) an article by Hampton Keathley IV who presents a largely objective analysis of the two positions.
119
Cessationist Unique role of miracles End of office of Apostleship Foundational nature of Apostles and Prophets Nature of miraculous gifts Testimony of Church history Sufficiency of scripture New Testament rules for miraculous gifts
120
Continuationist “Signs and wonders" and all the spiritual gifts of 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 are valid for today and should be "earnestly desired" as Paul expressed in 1 Corinthians 14:1 Desiring these gifts should not be out of an apatite for the spectacular Signs and wonders had a tremendous impact on the birth of the church where we often see miracles help lead to conversions Signs and wonders are God's witness to His Word Signs ad wonders shatter the shell of disinterest; they can shatter the shell of cynicism; they can shatter the shell of false religion
121
“Open but cautious” Love is far more important than any of the gifts because it will last into eternity, whereas they gifts will pass away The working of Signs and wonders occurs according to the will of sovereign God When Paul says that certain gifts will pass away it is apparent that is will occur when Christ comes again When God works in miraculous ways it can spark revival
122
Application There is place for all three positions in one church as long as we focus on exercising our gifts for the edification of the saints and the building up of the church within the structure order and culture of our church The practice of the gifts must conform to principles and rules given in scripture The challenge before us not so much why we don’t see certain gifts in the church but how we can exercise those gifts that are obviously present to the maximum and to the glory of God.

Instruct I charge thee in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching - 2Tim 4:1 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brothers, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another - Rom 15:14

Act 9: When he came to Jerusalem, he was trying to associate with the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. (27) But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. (28) And he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. (29) And he was talking and arguing with the Hellenistic Jews; but they were attempting to put him to death.
156
Act 11: The news about them reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas off to Antioch. (23) Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; (24) for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord. (25) And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul; (26) and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

Act 20: From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. (18) And when they had come to him, he said to them, "You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, (19) serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; (20) how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, (21) solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. (22) "And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, (23) except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. (24) "But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.

A reflection on the past
I was with you the whole time …serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me … I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ
165
Future plans But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God … to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God
166
Final warning Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. "I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. "Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.
167
Farewell greeting "For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole council of God. When he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all

Appointed as watchmen Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman to the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them from Me. When I say to the wicked, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. Eze 3:17-18

Multi-generational disciple-making
You’ve heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who’ll be able to pass them on to others. II Tim 2:2
172
Leading by example Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings II Tim 3:10
173
Personal testimony I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. I Tim 1:12-17
174
High standards This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. I Tim 1:18-19
175
Teaching the basics First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension. I Tim 2:1-8
176
Remain true to the gospel
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry II Tim 4:1-5
177
Sufficiency of scripture
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work II Tim 3:16-17

Christ’s motivation Heb 12:1-3 …, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart

Three enemies of disciple-makers
the world the Devil and the flesh “You once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience — among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh” – Eph 2:2-3a

How paradigms are altered
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind … Rom 12:2 Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Why we don’t do it The performance – achievement paradigm The frenetic life-style paradigm 1Co 9: I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
