4 Pre-Presentation Exercise!

5 Todays Presentation “Are you ready to plan your ExpressRoute deployment with Skype for Business? In this session we review the process and requirements for deploying ExpressRoute with Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business. From BGP routing through segmenting traffic and planning your cutover, this session has everything you need for success with ExpressRoute and Skype for Business”

6 But you promised exercise!
Everybody stand up Please keep standing if… You know all flavors of Express Route You know all connection options of Express Route You know all decision points for Express Route You know Express Route well enough to explain this to this audience

7 We’re going to take a different approach
Todays plan: Explain Express Route Explain the benefits of using Express Route Explain how to test if Express Route is beneficial to you Explain the why behind Express Route, help you with the “if” and point you to the How of Express Route

9 Intro into Express Route

10 What is Express Route? What is Express Route Benefits of Express Route
Managed connection Offered by qualified partners Between the customers Edge and the Office 365 Edge Benefits of Express Route Predictable performance Allows to apply Quality of Service and Enterprise-Grade Resilience

11 Edges? (Network) Edge Skype for Business Edge
Device that serves as the delimiter between the internal and external network Customer Edge is where the customer traffic leaves the private network and enters the MPLS Cloud or Internet Microsoft Edge is the “Azure Front Door” where traffic leaves the internet or Express Route and enters the Azure Network Skype for Business Edge Defined Role in Skype for Business Physical or virtual server hosting the Edge Role Is the delimiter between the internal and external pieces of the SfB Topology Most Customers have their SfB Edge close to their Network Edge. Azure has their Edges (Azure Front Door) not necessarily close to the SfB Edge

12 Express Route Benefits

Microsoft AzureCon 2015 9/28/ :22 AM Microsoft Peering (Office 365) overview Customer Network Connectivity Provider Microsoft Cloud ExpressRoute Microsoft Cloud Services NAT Client connectivity to Microsoft Cloud services (Microsoft peering) Customer must NAT all traffic into Microsoft with valid public IPv4 addresses Microsoft must be able to validate the ownership of the IPv4 Connectivity from Microsoft to Customer servers on public IPs (Microsoft peering) Example: ADFS server Customer must NAT all traffic from Microsoft destined to valid IPv4 addresses within the customer network Partner Edge Microsoft Edge © 2015 Microsoft Corporation. 17 Express Route Worldwide
Worldwide Coverage Express Route is available in all regions of the world Localized Office 365 Edges are available For geographically dispersed companies, per-region Express Routes are recommended Centralizing an Express Route Connection could add additional delays Recommended deployment scenario Verify if a location benefits from Express Route Choose the right connection model Don’t centralize traffic if possible Office Location Express Route Connection Point

18 Express Route & SfB

19 Performance goals For optimal Skype for Business media quality, the following network performance metrics should be met: Metric Client to Office 365 edge Customer edge to Office 365 edge Latency (one way) <50ms <30ms Latency (RTT or Round-trip Time) <100ms <60ms Burst packet loss <10% during any 200ms interval <1% during any 200ms interval Packet loss <1% during any 15s interval <0.1% during any 15s interval Packet inter-arrival jitter <30ms during any 15s interval <15ms during any 15s interval Packet reorder <0.05% out-of-order packets <0.01% out-of-order packets

20 Impact of not meeting networking goals
Inside your network All client communication suffers reduced quality; includes PSTN calls, conference calls, peer-to-peer calls; can lead to connection issues and disconnects Between your network and Office 365 Conferences will suffer from quality issues; PSTN calling (if Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling is deployed) will suffer from quality issues; peer- to-peer calling should not be impacted Clients working remotely (home, coffee shop, hotel) All client communication can be impacted No, or almost no, control over this

21 Why goals, not requirements?
Some goals might not be met ? Geographical distances Using a European-based Office 365 tenant for users in Australia means they will not meet all requirements Environmental circumstances Some countries have more advanced infrastructures Certain locations are connected via satellite or broadcast connections Some networks you have no control over (coffee shops, hotels) Investment cost versus gain (ROI) Meeting the goals with old equipment requires investment Some locations might only have a few users but require a very high investment While goals should be met, sometimes the costs outweigh the benefits

23 Performance goals (repeated)
For optimal Skype for Business media quality, the following network performance metrics should be met: Metric Client to Office 365 edge Customer edge to Office 365 edge Latency (one way) <50ms <30ms Latency (RTT or Round-trip Time) <100ms <60ms Burst packet loss <10% during any 200ms interval <1% during any 200ms interval Packet loss <1% during any 15s interval <0.1% during any 15s interval Packet inter-arrival jitter <30ms during any 15s interval <15ms during any 15s interval Packet reorder <0.05% out-of-order packets <0.01% out-of-order packets

27 Express Route Decision Points

28 Road to Express Route Perform a Network Readiness Assessment with traffic simulation this will inventory any requirements for Express Route, either technical or functional the traffic simulation will highlight if the network metric goals are being met and if they could be met using Express Route The Network Readiness Assessment Essentials contains a traffic simulation that can be used for this Present Express Route to your customer Education on Express Route is key Express Route is more than “just” a managed connection A decision should be made on whether or not it helps the customer Express Route is not a default yes Walk through decision points & triggers After investigating your customer needs, present whether or not Express Route addresses those needs Express Route can address both technical as well as functional needs

29 When to consider Express Route
If it improves network performance If a 99.9% SLA is required If a managed connection is required If a highly available connection is required When QoS is a requirement If guaranteed bandwidth is required

30 Network Readiness Testing Tools

37 Examples

38 Scenario 1 “Customer is planning on implementing Skype for Business Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling” The customer executes Network Readiness Essentials with Traffic Simulation Add-on During traffic simulation, it is found the network has an average packet loss of 4 percent An Advanced assessment is triggered and it is found that the wireless network is at fault. After remediation, the new traffic simulation shows <1 percent packet loss and all other metrics are also green over a 7 day period Network Readiness Essentials uncovers no business needs for Express Route Based on these actions, the customer decides that Express Route is not needed Note; even though packet loss was found, and the goals as set in the network metrics were not met, Express Route was not the correct way to move forward. By using the Network Readiness Assessment, the right solution was found and executed on.

39 Scenario 2 “Customer is planning on implementing Skype for Business Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling” The customer executes Network Readiness Essentials with Traffic Simulation Add-on During traffic simulation over a 7 day period, the network metrics are all green. Network Readiness Essentials uncovers the business need for a connection into Office 365 that must be covered with a SLA The ISP is involved and the ISP can offer a 99.9 percent availability secured by a SLA when using Express Route Based on these actions, the customer decides that Express Route is needed. Note; even though all networking metrics were green, and Express Route was not needed to recover from possible networking issues, there was a clear business need for Express Route. Moving forward with Express Route was the right decision in this case.
