When does the president-elect become the president?
The 20th Amendment to the US Constitution says that the president-elect is sworn in as the president of the United States on January 20th at noon. Before the 20th Amendment was ratified in 1933, presidential inaugurations happened on March 4th. The time between the election and the inauguration is called the “lame duck” period. If a president resigns or dies while in office, the vice president is sworn in as the new president.
