My Career Completed a BSc(Hons) in Environmental Management with a Sandwich year in industry Start working for Jacobs and move to Hyder Consulting with responsibility for site supervision As my career develops I become involved in more complex project culminating in the Olympic Park, at this juncture I joined Atkins I have now worked at Atkins for 5 years. Involved in the M74 and Olympics and now Project manager with financial responsibilities for projects in excess of £1.5million fees and for junior staff etc.

Job Description The Atkins Land & Development division is a multidisciplinary environmental team. The Birmingham Geo-environmental Engineering team is seeking a graduate environmental geologist or engineering geologist to assist in its workload of investigating, assessing and remediating/regenerating contaminated sites for redevelopment. This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate who is seeking a stimulating career with geo-environmental bias. The successful applicant should be stimulated by fresh challenges and seek to surmount them in a practical way. The applicant must be planning to work towards chartered status. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, logical, practical and enthusiastic geo-environmental engineer with good interpersonal and communication skills. Applicants must have a sound knowledge of contaminated land. Role and Responsibilities The role will require work on geo-environmental elements of projects on commercial/industrial developments, brownfield regeneration and closed landfills for both public and private sector clients. Project time is likely to be split between office and site work, throughout the UK and overseas. Flexibility to travel and work away from home, sometimes for extended periods of site work, will be essential and this may include overseas projects. The responsibilities (following a suitable level of training and supervision) will include preparing desk study reports, designing ground investigations, preparing specifications, drawings and ground investigation contracts, supervising contaminated land ground investigations, laboratory test scheduling and preparing factual and interpretative reports including conceptual site models. The candidate must have some knowledge of site and ground investigation techniques and/or contaminated land risk assessment. The Individual The successful candidate will; Be a graduate, having successfully completed a degree course (BSc) and associated Masters in engineering geology or environmental geology. Complement the existing team. Be capable of working independently as well as within the team. Be a logical, practical and enthusiastic person with very strong problem solving skills. Be able to show how they are developing their own knowledge in technical aspects. Have a good technical understanding of geology, site investigation works, ground engineering and contaminated land. Have a very good understanding of the impacts of geo-environmental works upon development. Be considering a route towards chartered status with a relevant institution (CGeol, CEnv or CIWEM). Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

London 2012 Games Olympic Park
Multidisciplinary engineering infrastructure design, project managing enabling works, site clearance and remediation, environmental impact assessment FOR USE IN UK ONLY. Contract: Consultant for the design of the Olympic Park and site wide infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Client: Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Description: Atkins has been appointed as part of the team to take forward the design of the Olympic Park infrastructure. The work streams with which we are involved include landscape and public realm, utilities, security, waterways, drainage, roads and bridges. We are working in consultation with other appointed consultants, statutory authorities, contractors, and ODA delivery partners to ensure that the Olympic Park works are completed to cost and programme. We are leading the design for the enabling and remedial works, coordinating utility services design for the Olympic Park and completing detail design of services for the north site. We are undertaking scheme and detailed design for the loop road and secondary roads in the north of the Olympic Park together with scheme and detailed design of the perimeter public highways including the A12 and Ruckholt Road. We are also in close relationship with the Stratford City development to coordinate the highway approach across both projects and are designing a number of bridge structures on site.

The Atkins solution: The Dubai Metro is currently regarded as the world's largest transport infrastructure project under construction. It will be the longest automated, driverless system in the world and will ease traffic congestion by improving mobility throughout Dubai. A key challenge has been to integrate the specialist skills from Atkins' international offices to work with our local presence on this tightly programmed project. (

Structural, utilities, electrical, architectural, safety engineering, mechanical, piping design and telecoms Name of project: Galloper Wind Farm Offshore Substation Platform Location: UK Services provided by Atkins: Structural, utilities, electrical, architectural, safety engineering, mechanical, piping design and telecoms What: Atkins’ carried out the detailed design of the topsides for the Galloper Wind Farm Offshore Substation Platform with the complete topsides expected to be in the order of 1600 tonnes The Atkins solution: Atkins’ design of the offshore substation platform (OSP) incorporates all of the temporary construction, transportation, installation and commissioning conditions, including the complex sequential pull-through of multiple submarine cables for connection to the OSP equipment.

Architecture, civil and structural engineering, MEP engineering, sustainable design, construction supervision Name of project: Bahrain World Trade Center Location: Manama, Bahrain Services provided by Atkins: Architecture, civil and structural engineering, MEP engineering, sustainable design, construction supervision What: Atkins provided architecture, civil and structural engineering, MEP engineering, sustainable design and construction supervision services for the twin 240m high office towers and shopping mall. The Atkins solution: Atkins achieved a world first by aesthetically incorporating commercial wind turbines into the fabric of the building. The three 29m diameter wind turbines and the shape of the paired towers have a direct and tangible relationship via wind dynamics. The Carbon Critical Design of the Bahrain World Trade Center meant it was fully tenanted by major regional businesses from day one. Atkins also received a number of accolades for the design including a Best Tall Building award from The Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, a Construction Week award and an Innovation award from the Building Exchange.

Belfast sewers upgrade United Kingdom
Project management, planning, preliminary design, contract supervision and administration Name of project: Belfast Sewers Upgrade Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom Services provided by Atkins: Project management, planning, preliminary design, contract supervision and administration What: Atkins supplied project management, planning, preliminary design, contract supervision and administration to improve the water quality and reduce flood risk together with the rehabilitation and upgrading of a Victorian sewer system in Belfast. The Atkins solution: Atkins is the lead consultant of the largest contract ever to be awarded by Northern Ireland Water. The scale of the project is immense, including the construction of 9.5km of tunnels, 21 access shafts and a pumping station housed in Belfast’s deepest and largest excavation. The new infrastructure will address both flooding and pollution issues resulting from severe storm events.

Highways Agency United Kingdom
Maintaining the civils infrastructure of the UK’s road network in partnership with the Highways Agency for over 25 years The Highways Agency manages 7,100 km of road and their aim is to provide “safe roads, reliable journeys and informed travellers”. Our key projects with the HA at present are: M25 Widening - The biggest highways project we have ever been involved with – the M25 widening – reached financial close in May and construction is already underway. In partnership with Balfour Beatty and Skanska, will be responsible for increasing capacity on 58km of one of the most heavily used roads in the UK. The construction value of this project is over £1 billion and will be completed in time for the 2012 London Olympic Games Area 6, where Atkins is the first ever single service provider for a Managing Agent Contract. We provide integrated highway management and maintenance services for almost 1300kms of motorway and trunk roads within the counties of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. the new contract is worth £100 million over five years, with the potential for extension up to 2015. We provide vehicle consultancy support, to advise and assist with the specification and procurement of a new fleet contract for the Traffic Officer Service. We are at the forefront of helping the HA develop Active Traffic Management schemes.

Land remediation, onsite drainage and infrastructure design, ecology, geotechnics Name of project: Coed Darcy- Sustainable village Location: Wales, UK Services provided by Atkins: Land remediation, onsite drainage and infrastructure design, ecology, geotechnics What: Atkins is working with St Modwen Developments Ltd to transform a former oil refinery into the first sustainable ‘urban village’ in South Wales. The Atkins solution: Atkins is taking the lead in the extensive remediation programme, onsite drainage and infrastructure, offsite link road and necessary improvements to the motorway junction. The team is also providing services in the ecological consideration of the site as it’s adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The overall development is a true example of providing integrated multi-disciplinary solutions. By 2027, this redeveloped site will be transformed into a new £1.2 billion urban village, providing homes for around 10,000 people.
