0 Redesigning Math Pathways: A NASH Priority

1 Today, we will hear from system leaders working together to advance student success across the nation Moderator: Nancy Zimpher, NASH Chair and Chancellor State University of New York Presenters: Jo Boughman, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs University System of Maryland Johanna Duncan-Poitier, Senior Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges State University of New York Randy Schulte, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academics Tennessee Board of Regents Nancy Shapiro, Associate Vice Chancellor 2016 | National Association of System Heads

2 The Quantway Difference: One of SUNY’s Best Examples
75% 69% Students in Traditional Sequence Quantway Students at a SUNY Campus (Fall 2014) 21% Quantway Students at a SUNY Campus (Spring 2015) Notes from Carnegie PowerPoint: For Quantway 1, the first semester, we also compared the success rates of our Quantway students with a comparable cohort. Quantway 1 is intended to replace the traditional two semesters of algebra. We have re-conceptualized the algebra content that is necessary for succeeding in a college level quantitative reasoning course. We found that students in the traditional sequence have only a 21% success rate in one term, and only 29% in two terms; whereas, 56% of our QW 1 students were successful in one semester or term. Success in a course is defined as achieving a C, or better; or pass in pass/fail course. Campus example is Rockland in Fall 2014. *Success rate among developmental math students in traditional pathways

3 Funding support from the Gates Foundation & SUNY
The Campus Spread PROGRESS: Triple # of students in one academic year: 750 to 2,500 students On-boarding : - 10 colleges in - 10 colleges in Funding support from the Gates Foundation & SUNY Always keep about this distance between text and the edge of slides and other content. Faculty Driven SUNY/Carnegie-Infrastructure Campus Involvement 2 pilot campuses 1 scale-up campus (Rockland) 10 campuses added 16 Explorer Campuses 28 Total Campuses
