Asian Americans can come from a variety of countries The six largest are China Japan The Philippines India Korea Vietnam

Past statistics Until 1960 USA severely limited the number of Asian immigrate As a result there population made up only 4% of the United States Smaller than African-American and Latinos However, there numbers are increasing rapidly From 3.5 million in 1980 to 10 million in 2000 Exports believe that in 2040 Asians will make up 10% of the United State’s population

Model Asian Americans have been called a “model” minority group because they done well economically, socially, and educationally. This ignores the fact that they are diverse For every Asian family with an annual income of $75,000, there is another with less than $10,000

Roots Although Asian Americans trace their roots to at least 25 different countries, most belong to one of the two largest groups Chinese Americans Japanese Americans

In the mid 1800 about 200,000 Chinese people immigrated to this country. This caused Congress the enact the Exclusion Act in 1882 This banned immigrations from china until the 1960 During that time, Chinese Americans suffered from economic, political, and social discrimination

Many came during the early 20th century Attempting the escape political and social upheavals in Japan After Pearl Harbor, our government sent Japanese Americans to evacuation camps This was similar to branded them as disloyal Cost Japanese Americans billions of dollars In 1988 the USA formally apologized Sent up a $1.25 billion trust fund Aimed to compensate victims of discrimination
