3 Musical Theater A play, where music and dance are used to tell the story. We have a whole unit on musical theater so this is as much as you’re going to get here 

4 What is a Play? A play is a script acted out live for an audience.

5 Comedy and Tragedy These masks represent the 2 faces of drama. Classical drama is separated in two parts, comedy and tragedy.

How was The Colosseum built? How many people could it hold? What type of technology did The Colosseum have? What type of entertainment was seen in The Colosseum? Describe how Naval Battles happened for entertainment in The Colosseum.

12 Emperor Constantine Who was Constantine and what did he do to theater?
He was the first Christian Emperor He outlawed theater, and it stayed against the law for almost 1000 years! From 300 A.D. to nearly 1300 A.D.!

13 Medieval Theater Medieval theater took place in the catholic church.
Morality plays What is a morality play? The most famous morality play was Everyman, written (we think) by a priest.

14 Renaissance Theater The Renaissance (or rebirth) happened after the great Plague of Europe…where 1/3 of the population of Europe died… After this there was more food for the remaining people and great wealth and prosperity allowing for the arts to flourish.

What are some of the things that happened for entertainment during Shakespeare’s time? How did people feel about theater during this time? Why did the theater’s close? What was Shakespeare’s theater like? Why did productions take place during the day? How did the audience know where the play was taking place if there were no sets? How did the theater owners publicize their plays? What is a groundling? Since women couldn’t act on stage, who did the women’s parts? What about kissing?

What did people do before there was a director?
