What is Online Safety? The term ‘online safety’ reflects a widening range of issues associated with technology and a user’s access to content, contact with others and behavioural issues. The Campion School aims to promote responsible use of the Internet and the World Wide Web, whilst raising awareness of the safety issues associated with electronic communications. AD

What is The Internet? The Internet is “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities including, but not limited to the World Wide Web, social media, VOIP, etc.” AD

What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web is “an information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.” AD

Responsible Use The Internet has developed into an essential tool in modern society. More people than ever are exposed to the internet. Working with London Grid for Learning (LGFL), internet access within The Campion School is moderated, providing filtering appropriate to the age and needs of the students. Students are taught what is acceptable online and how to use online facilities in a safe way. They will be educated in the effective use of the World Wide Web in research, including the skills of sourcing information and evaluation of the quality of information. AD

Students will learn… Creating a sensible, safe, and secure password to keep their accounts safe. The principles of online safety and how they could do better to remain safe online, including protecting their identities, concealing personal information and avoiding situations which could land them in trouble. Online bullying, the effects of online bullying and the consequences. How to use social media safely and responsibly Online etiquette in a variety of scenarios AD

Students will learn… What to do if they encounter any online dangers
How ICT equipment is disposed of, the environmental effects of this and the online safety issues that this can cause surrounding personal data left on storage devices. Surveillance and online safety issues that can arise from living in a modern society. Legislation that concerns ICT and how they are protected by it, along with their digital rights. Positive use of the Internet and the World Wide Web to enhance students’ studies and school experience. AD

Outside of Lessons Computer Science is not compulsory for students to study at key stages 4 and 5. The school’s pastoral curriculum has been updated and includes lessons that are taught to ensure that students are being delivered relevant content throughout their time at school. Students will learn: Legislation surrounding the use of Information Technology. Responsible use of social media. Online sources for research and why they may not always be reliable. The role of online media in politics/ Radicalisation and social media. AD

Issues of Online Safety
Issues of Online Safety are taken seriously at The Campion School. All instances of online bullying will be treated as seriously as any other bullying, and are liable to the same sanctions. Serious issues of Online Safety will be raised and brought to the attention of a member of senior staff. Child protection issues that arise from issues of Online Safety shall be reported directly to the school’s child protection officer. AD

School Policy The nature of Online Safety in a school environment means that several policies play a part in protecting the school community with regards to the use of electronic equipment.
