1 Ecosystem Health and Sustainable Agriculture Warzaw December 4 -5, 2008 One World, One Health
Prof Ulf Magnusson Department of Clinical Sciences Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences

2 From the global fight against the avian influenza.....

3 Infectious diseases are becoming more Global
Causes: More travelling More trade – animals and animal products Climate Change

4 The human – domestic animal (agriculture) – wildlife (ecosystem) interface
Zoonoses

5 The importance of zoonoses and this interface (I)
Jones et al Nature,451:990-

6 The importance of zoonoses and this interface (II)

7 Examples of zoonotic infections moving between domestic and wildlife to humans…..
Tuberculosis Cattle Deer Badgers Pasteurisation In Europe

8 Giardiasis Water borne Intestinal In Europe

9 Brucella melitensis Mainly sheep and goat Also small wild ruminants
Occupational health hazard Also cheese and milk if not pasteurised Ongoing outbreak in Bosnia , very parhogenic

10 Nipah virus Malaysia Fruit bats and pigs
, 100 persons died, 1 million pigs killed, respiratory disease Habitat destruction or pig farms in “wrong” places suspected…

11 So what about health and sustainable agriculture ?
One have to consider: Biodiversity - in the surrounding environment - at the farm Biosecurity Production economy and risks Lots of conflicting interest

12 Biodiversity in the environment and infectious diseases
High biodiversity in wildlife generally good (serves as a buffer) Also low density of animals Also large habitats

13 “Biodiversity” at the farm and infections
Generally regarded as a risk to mix or keep several species closely together However, in another way the farm as a whole more vulnerable if just one species Mixed messages! Biosecurity – Production Economy

14 Biosecurity and farming systems
It is easier to keep a high biosecurity if there is: One species at the farm Small units Confined units
