Find at least on non-government group/person that opposes The College Sports Council, an advocacy group for men's sports, Is there any controversy with this issue It has been the topic of much debate and litigation because it has obvious benefits for women but in some cases it works to the disadvantage of men. In order to comply with Title IX, numerous schools have elected to cut men’s programs rather than spend extra money to create a proportional number of women’s athletic opportunities (Irons, 2006). What is the cost – either money or services included in this issue Comprehensive statistical studies are not available but one example is the Ohio State football team, which brought in $36 million into the college after paying for all of its maintenance, scholarships and coaching fees. The men’s basketball team brought in a profit of $9million, while the women’s hockey team grossed a measly $1,642 to offset its $1.2 million in upkeep. But the women’s hockey team has to be equally provided for. Average operating revenue of female sports is $804,577, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and obtained by Freedom of Information Act.

Economic information about the problem for those opposed The cost of it; quantitative There are no studies with comprehensive national statistics on the cost of Title IX. However the average cost of an athletic program at the Division I level is 58 million dollars with an average of cost of female programs being 20 million. What is the negative economic impact The argument here is that yes while female athletes are receiving more opportunities to participate in sports, due to the financial obligation of schools to provide for female programs even if they lose money (like Florida State’s women’s basketball team who lost a net of 2 million dollars). This lost of funds takes away the college’s ability to use the profit generated by men’s sports to be put back into the general fund for academic purposes.

Solution: Identify what you think is the best solution to address this problem Identify your solution and explain how it might affect you? to reduce the required percentage of woman participants to 43% of varsity spots. That means that no matter how greatly women outweigh men, the college is only required to have 43% of the spots for woman. (Foley, 2008) This accounts for the difference in participation and interest that is greater with men than it is with women. You offered an explanation justifying the rationale for your choice of alternatives. (Why is this a better choice than the others?) This option is better than the alternative of allowing schools to decide on their own what sports will be offered based on which sports make money What are some possible negative consequences of this solution Some negative consequences of this solution is that schools will begin to cut girls sports and opportunities for females in sports will decrease.

How might this public policy issue relate to your future plans? With less female college sports this limits the amount of female scholarships and thus less opportunity for females to receive aid in education finances. This could also impact my future by creating more male sports teams and thus more playing or coaching opportunities Referenced an approved professional poll for or against your solution Gallup poll 61% feel title ix is positive, 39% feel it is negative.
