Skynet In The Classroom: How Using STEM Robots Can Expand Standards Based Instruction Presented by: Mason Lewis Dan Koch
2
Children of the 80’s and 90’s will remember
3
“These robots are so cool, but how is it helping students be successful in my content area?”
What are these robots? Ozobot Makey Makey Sphero Little Bits
4
Three Learning Objectives
1) Teachers can use robots and robotic devices to teach assigned state standards 2) Teachers can use devices in ways they weren’t designed so students learn standards 3) Teachers will understand how tying these robots to standards instruction eases the purchasing abilities
5
Mason Lewis BS in Elementary Education from UCF
M of E in Education Technology from Northwestern State University 12 years of teaching experience in Elementary and Middle School Science
6
Dan Koch Apple Distinguished Educator – 2015
PBS Lead Digital Innovator – 2016 Florida Governor’s Shine Award – 2015 8 years instructor and technology leader
7
Ozobot Small smart line following robot
Uses sensors to interpret information drawn on paper Introduces linear thinking and cause/effect to students
8
Ozobot in Action Students learn how computers are programmed
Ozobot reacts to what the user draws on the paper User can also program the Ozobot through proprietary software - Ozoblockly
9
Sphero Bluetooth controlled device that allows the user to manipulate it in real time Also can be programmed in proprietary app to complete tasks
10
Sphero in Action Students learn more in depth programming by having the robot have more interactions and complete more tasks in its surrounding envrionment
11
Makey Makey Device that turns everyday objects into touchpads
Can be utilized with a computer in supplement the use of specific keys
12
Makey Makey in Action
13
little Bits little Bits are electronic building blocks
Each Bit has its own unique job/function Bits snap together with magnets No soldering, wiring, or programming
14
Standards Based Ozobot
24 Hours of Ozobot Students found the speed of the Ozobot as it traveled around a mock Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Circuit Students found distance Ozobot travelled and divided it by the time it took the Ozobot to find the speed it was travelling Can be converted from cm/second to km/hour
15
24 Hours of Ozobot Video goes here
16
Standards Based Sphero
Students use a device with a Sphero to knock over objects of different mass Students must figure out at what amount of energy is required to knock the object over
17
Ramming Speed Mr. Sphero
Video goes here
18
Standards Based Makey Makey
Students used Makey Makey to identify different objects around the classroom that were conductive Students made a T-Chart of the objects-Conductive vs Nonconductive Students then compare and contrasted the different objects and inferred what made something conductive
19
Makey Makey Making Noise
Video of students using Makey Makey Conductivity Lab goes here
20
Standards Based little Bits
Students constructed an apparatus that created sound or light Then used apparatus to demonstrate wave properties Also created an apparatus that demonstrates how energy is converted to chemical to other forms of energy
21
little Bits – Big Learning
Video of little Bits here
22
Funding Sources Use Lead Teacher Money
Demonstrate Standards Based Instruction Use SAC Fund to purchase more robots!
