Your child’s first year at school
The Foundation Stage of learning at Prestwood Infant School.

How things are run… Reception is run as a unit.
Both teachers and LSA’s will be teaching your children. Child initiated play is based throughout the entire 3 rooms and the outdoor area.

Being at school Typical school day Begins at 8.50 am
Registration and Phonics Assembly Learning on our own time and adult led learning (observations and assessments). Maths- taught to your child strengths and developmental level. Playtime- with the whole school. Snack time Literacy as a whole class. Groups for writing or an adult led activity. Indoor and Outdoor – Appropriate clothing needed. 1 ICT lessons per week (Tuesday) Well done assembly – (Friday) 1 PE lessons per week with Miss Bounds (PE Co-ordinator) (Wednesday) Afternoons- readers and other curricular activities, e.g. Lola

Lunch time Please select the children’s food beforehand.
The children find their names on the computer and are given their food. They can select fruit and vegetables to go with their meal. Each child is given a glass of water and are encouraged to finish it during their meal. The children are offered pudding but do not have to have it. Any issues that have arisen this half term please speak to the class teacher.

Mud As part of our curriculum the children will be outside for more than 50 % of their time in Reception. Please ensure that your child has a coat in school at all times. We have strong rules about Wellington boots which are reinforced daily. Please be understanding that your child WILL come home one day covered in mud!

What your child needs to bring
Book bag – please make sure it is in school every day Named water bottle for the classroom Named P.E bag with named kit- please change plimsolls when you change school shoes! Wednesday- leave kits in school until Christmas for washing. Wellies and waterproofs, if they can do them on their own, – they will be outside!- Please name. Make sure we have medical forms with all allergies etc.

Coats, jumpers and shoes
Please help your child be as independent as possible- putting on their coats/ doing the zip up and putting their socks on themselves in the morning. Helpful tip for coats- Super man or acrobat!

What your child will bring home
Reading record book and 2 books a week- Please sign every time, even an initial and date is better than nothing! Practise at home daily- read other books, magazines and comics too! (21st September) Bag of tricky words to practice- every day please! Tick when child knows immediately- 4 ticks = new word. Phonic sounds. Library book- will start shortly and will be changed weekly.

The tricky bits- handwriting
Encourage froggy fingers. Right handed/ Left handed. Fine motor practise- squeezing balls, threading, peg boards etc. Triangular pens. Scissor practise. Name writing- please use lower case letters to teach your child to write their name.

Robot arms and sounding out!
Just to get you started! Practising this skills makes a BIG difference to your child’s ability to read words independently in the future. Try ‘ can you get your C-oa-t please?’ ‘Where is the b-e-d?’

How we assess your child’s progress
Observations by all staff- daily Foundation Stage profile- filled in by teachers and reported externally. For you : Reports Parent consultations Individual teacher meetings can be arranged by parents or teachers as needed. IPad Learning Journeys

Working together * WOW BOARD *
In order for your child to gain the most success from this year we hope to work in close partnership with you as parents and carers. * WOW BOARD * If you have any problems or queries about ANYTHING please do come and see us. It is important to us that both children and parents are both happy.

Stay and Play and parental feedback
Thank you for all those who came to play with their child last week! We will be holding lots more in the future! Feedback- please review the school as and when you can on ‘Parent View’.

Next Meeting We are holding a curriculum meeting to discuss reading, writing and how the children learn on the 7th October at 6pm- 7pm. Please come a long!
