1 Skills Development Centre

2 Thank you for reviewing the needs of Al Fidaa Foundation
Thank you for reviewing the needs of Al Fidaa Foundation. To address the need for Social Welfare and Development, the Al Fidaa Foundation was formed in 2008 with the aim of alleviating poverty in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The Al Fidaa Foundation is a registered Non Profit (NPO No: ), Public Benefit (PBO No: ) and Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE No: COGP EME) organization.

3 Enterprise Skills Development
Seamstresses Training Enterprise Program Introduction In the Eastern Cape, many young women do not succeed to enter a self-reliant and independent business life after their apprenticeship training. Inadequate training in entrepreneurial issues and quality production causes frustration and failure. Many end up going back into poverty or enter life-long dependency after early marriages. Al Fidaa Foundation endeavors to select from our data base of young female individuals who wish to become financially independent. Our aim is to train these individuals and gift them with tools for their trade. We have successfully trained 70 plus females with the knowledge and skills to do pattern making, alterations and garment manufacturing since its inception. Some of our students have went on to finding employment in their respective field. We are so proud of the achievements of these students knowing that their stepping stone into the world was right here at the Al Fidaa Foundation’s skills centre. Background With the existence of the Skill Centre, the adolescents in Port Elizabeth have a central meeting point to go to. Here, they can also find counselling in disturbing issues, emotional anxieties and problems can be discuss with others of their age under the supervision of adult qualified councillors that they can trust. Furthermore the centre will be a platform for various youth projects, where the youth can try their talents and abilities and develop self-confidence and self-reliance. Within this project, they should learn to identify and address problems and develop strategies to come up with a solution. As a reliable contact person, a female social worker is available for individual counselling, to girls and young women in particular. Within regular office hours she will meet with the students who are in need of counselling and if desired she will also make contact with their families to resolve conflicts. The role of a social worker is vital as it improves the student’s academic performance when the learner is free from worry.

4 Objectives The skills development overall objective is to reduce poverty among 50 young seamstresses on an annual basis in the Nelson Mandela Metro district. The strategy is to run a successful training centre as an educational facility to give the students additional training on entrepreneurial issues, quality production, and at the same time provide the infrastructure, where they work and earn their income in a self-managed business. Goals The goal of the SKILL programme is to provide opportunities for young people, living in the Eastern Cape, to develop them personally, as well as to improve their academic performances and career opportunities, as a contribution to poverty reduction and self-reliance. To be able to achieve this goal, a skills centre was established in Nelson Mandela Metro in Here the youth can find an environment to develop their personalities and their personal and interpersonal skills e.g. by participating in (creative) projects. Finally, young people have the chance to acquire the necessary business skills to implement their own ideas and run them as profitable businesses. In this way they will be able to contribute to a sustainable development of the region. Beneficiaries Al Fidaa Foundation has a 100% black beneficiary base. Assisting the previously disadvantage individuals from impoverished communities in acquiring resources that were previously unavailable to them.

5 Education Computer Training Centre Overview
The purpose of the Computer training centre is to train and teach computer literacy to the students enrolled in the sewing course. The centre will run a three week computer course which will be scheduled in the afternoon to cater for the students enrolled in the seamstress sewing course. Many learners from previous disadvantage schools do not have basic computing skills due to un- availability of access to computers. Learners who finish grade 12 find it difficult to adjust quickly enough in the tertiary environment due to lack of computer skills. Many learners fall behind in their first year of studies at the tertiary organisations. Post grade 12 learners who are looking to enter the job market are finding it difficult as many job requirements insist on having computer literacy. Most aspects in the employment sector will at some time require the employee to be able to operate a computer, failing to do so make the employee less valuable to the company. It is the intention of the centre to train these individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently operate a computer that would enable them to do their own quotations and invoicing when they become self-sustainable. Basic Principles of Business Empowering their future The course introduces students to basic business topics such as marketing, management, accounting and business structures. Eastern Cape does not provide many opportunities for the youth searching the job market as a result they end up either leaving the province or remain in structural poverty. Al-Fidaa Foundation endeavours to provide our students with the necessary knowledge and skills so they may become self sufficient and enjoy financial freedom by operating their own business. We provide them with links to various government institutions that assist with the development of small businesses and to access start up funding costs.
