The production is a whimsical reinvention of Shakespeare's tragic love story, complete with rhymed couplets, creative wordplay, and fantastical machines -- similar to something Dr. Seuss might have come up with if he ever had his way with the script... The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet Introduction: The Story The Suessification of Romeo and Juliet follows the original storyline of William Shakespeare’s classic masterpiece, but is told in the speaking and rhyming style of a Dr. Seuss tale. The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet Introduction: The Story Romeo and Juliet is about a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families. This feud causes tragic results. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at a party. But their families hate each other. They are sure they will not be allowed to marry. Nevertheless, helped by Friar Laurence, they marry in secret, but before their wedding night Romeo kills Juliet's cousin in a duel, and in the morning he is forced to leave her. The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet Introduction: The Story Juliet's parents tell her she must marry Paris. They don’t know she is already married. She refuses, but later agrees because, with the help of Friar Laurence, she plans to fake her death and escape to be with Romeo. The Friar gives Juliet a sleeping potion. She seems to be dead and is put in a tomb. Romeo doesn’t know about the plan. He visits her grave, thinks she is dead, and kills himself. By the 1590s, Shakespeare was a managing partner in an acting company in London. Tradition has it that Shakespeare died on his birthday, April 23, The genius of Shakespeare's characters and plots are that they present real human beings in a wide range of emotions and conflicts that transcend their origins in Elizabethan England. When chronicling his works, scholars generally put his plays into three categories: Tragedies, Histories, and Comedies. Based on the story synopsis you read earlier, what category do you think Romeo and Juliet fits into? The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet Introduction: About Dr. Seuss Now let’s learn about the other major influence on our play, Dr. Seuss! Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Geisel attended Dartmouth College, where he began using the pseudonym "Seuss.” He married Helen Palmer in 1927. Geisel pursued cartooning, and his illustrations were published in numerous magazines. He worked in the advertising department of Standard Oil for 15 years. The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet Introduction: About Dr. Seuss Geisel's first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected 27 times before it was finally published. In 1954 Houghton Mifflin and Random House asked him to write a children's primer using 220 vocabulary words. The resulting book, The Cat in the Hat, was published in 1957 and was described by one critic as a "tour de force." Theodor Seuss Geisel died in California on September 24, 1991, at the age of 87. So what exactly is an adaptation? An adaptation happens when a literary source (like a short story, novel, etc.) is changed (adapted) into another type or style of work. Some of the very first experiments in filmmaking involved plays by Shakespeare, and his works have proved consistently popular with filmmakers throughout a century of cinema. Create a character map to help you see the relationships in the story. Since this story is also about families, you can make it into a family tree, but be sure to who are not family, like the Nurse and the Friar. Make one for each of the main characters in the story. Come up with fun costumes (maybe ones influenced by Dr. Seuss). Bring your cards to the play.
