Aged Care Facilities: Looking at how they can provide ‘more’ for ‘less’ Now seeing very frail residents

Meals on Wheels sector: Most obtain meals from Community Chef – a Fed/ State and Local Government initiative. Nutritional Guidelines – just released! Frozen meals from Supermarkets etc – not always nutritional

2&5 Inc. Social enterprise set up to address food insecurity in the Northern Suburbs of Geelong by improving access to affordable, sustainable, fresh and healthy food. This is achieved by providing high-quality fresh produce through production and retail.

Mission To Provide access to affordable, sustainable, fresh and healthy food in Norlane Why Norlane: Norlane is the second lowest SEIFA (disadvantage index) in Victoria Has only one fruit & vegetable shop outside of shopping centre for a population of 10,000 (approximately)

General Objectives 2&5 exists for the public benefit- including people of all abilities and backgrounds 2&5 is a charity and operating for charitable purposes. To promote healthy eating. To improve food security in the northern suburbs of Geelong – providing high quality fruit & Vegetables To provide education and employment opportunities. To encourage the community to develop sustainable food production. To promote the benefits of localised food production.

Food Security “Household food security is the application when all people at all times have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Food insecurity exists when people do not have adequate physical, social or economic access to food as defined above.” (FAO, 2003)

Social Traders Social Traders’ mission is to nurture, develop and grow the social enterprise sector in Australia. Their work revolves around raising awareness of social enterprise, building enterprise capability, and opening markets for social enterprises products and services. Assisted 2&5 progress by helping us develop the business plan, assisting with a loan, funding and ongoing business support

The Shop has a variety of fresh fruit / vegetables. “2&5”– the Australian Recommended daily intake of Fruit (2) and Vegetables (5)! (Australian Dietary Guidelines for older Australians)

Slices & cakes made on site Seasonal fruit & vegetables A place for locals to come and meet each other – to establish a community

Market Garden Grow vegetables Run an internship program
Run a CSA scheme Run a Work for the Dole program Sell the produce at our shop & at markets Run tours of the garden

Market Garden 5 acres under plough with further 2 acres to be planted.
Work for the Dole – assisting with building sheds / picking & packing the vegetables Provides skills and training for people to assist with employment. Market Garden to provide the income to cover the cost in Shop and Cafe

Emergency Relief Part of the Solution to Food Insecurity
Important to work together - one common goal Geelong Food Relief: - Wednesday – Friday Second Bite The Aim: “To make fruit and vegetables more accessible for the people of the area To lower the risk of food insecurity”

Emergency Food Relief Second Bite: Provide protein items that we can
cook in which to then sell and promote ‘simple’ cooking methods, as well as other lines Geelong Food Relief Provide food and other necessities three times a week for which clients come to shop to collect. Aim – to then buy other items whilst at shop Educating “healthy” eating

Food Insecurity – ageing population
Clients in their own homes – Loneliness Lack of motivation for cooking Risk of malnutrition We should be reaching out to this group!

Future Community – shop to act as place
to call in, catch up with other, discuss ‘whatever’s Buy local fresh produce Understand what to do with the fresh produce Cooking classes / recipe cards Work with Geelong Food Relief/ Second Bite and other Organisations’ as ‘one’ body
