1 Pollination and Fertilization in Flowering Plants
Plant Propagation

2 Pollination Begins when a grain of pollen lands on a receptive stigma.
It ends when a pollen tube punctures the embryo sac.

3 Pollen Grain = Generative nucleus + Tube nucleus
What kinds of things can move pollen from an anther to the receptive stigma of a flower? Stigma

4 Generative nucleus Pollen grain “germinates”. Tube nucleus forms a pollen tube which grows down through the style. Ovule inside the flower’s ovary

5 The generative nucleus divides to create 2 sperm.
The tube nucleus continues to lengthen the pollen tube

6 The tube nucleus disintegrates when it reaches the ovule
The tube nucleus disintegrates when it reaches the ovule. The 2 sperm continue down the pollen tube and eventually reach the ovule as well.

7 Ovule Pollen tube 2 Sperm Polar nucleus (Central cell) Integuments Egg nucleus Embryo sac

8 Fertilization In Angiosperms 2 different things are fertilized:
Egg nucleus Polar nucleus Fertilization is the fusion or “joining” of one sperm with the egg nucleus and the other sperm with the polar nucleus.

9 In Angiosperms there is a “double fertilization”
In Angiosperms there is a “double fertilization”. The egg nucleus is fertilized by one sperm and the polar nucleus is fertilized by the other sperm. Fertilized polar nucleus Fertilized egg nucleus

10 In nature many pollen grains will land on a stigma and start germinating simultaneously. Each ovule requires one grain of pollen for fertilization.
