Mythbusters The Designated Subject (DS) CTE teaching credential is only for ROP classes A teacher with a DS CTE credential cannot teach at a high school A teacher with a DS CTE credential cannot teach a-g courses A teacher with a previously issued DS in Vocational Education needs to earn the new DS in CTE to continue teaching A DS Teacher cannot teach at the Middle School Level

CTE Programs CTE program is a planned sequence of coherent courses designed to provide students with the technical knowledge and academic knowledge and skills Purpose: Gain immediate employment in a targeted career pathway occupation upon graduation from high school and to transition to postsecondary level instruction needed to prepare for advanced careers or professions in the career pathway

CTE Purpose and Function
Provide students with strong experience in and understanding of all aspects of an industry, which may include work-based learning experiences. PLANNING MANAGEMENT FINANCE TECHNICAL AND PRODUCTION SKILLS UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES OF TECHNOLOGY LABOR COMMUNITY HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENT

Arts, Media, and Entertainment Building and Construction Trade Business and Finance Education, Child Development, and Family Services Energy, Environment, and Utilities Engineering and Architecture Fashion and Interior Design Health Science and Medical Technology Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation Information and Communication Technology Manufacturing and Product Development Marketing, Sales, and Service Public Services Transportation

CTE Courses- Appropriate Credential
Course designated as career, technical, trade or vocational by the local level should be taught by an individual holding: Designated Subjects (DS) Vocational or Career Technical Education (CTE) Credential in the appropriate occupation (subject) or industry sector CTC credential leaflet 888

DS CTE Teaching Credential
Authorize the holder to: Teach in career, technical, trade, or vocational areas Clear credential issued under new program standards also authorizes (SDAIE) instruction to English learners

Assignment Option in Regulations
Holders of Single Subject Teaching Credentials in agriculture, business, home economics, industrial arts, and industrial technology education are also authorized to teach trade, technical, career or vocational classes - Title 5 section 80004(c).

DS CTE Applications All CTE applications must be submitted by Commission-approved program sponsor Employing school districts no longer authorized to submit applications Teacher may or may not have to have a job offer to apply for the Preliminary Credential – dependent on Commission-approved program sponsor Program Sponsor links (CTC)

DS CTE Requirements for Three-year Preliminary
Three years full-time work experience (1,000 hours = one year) High School Diploma (or equivalent) Recommendation by program approved under August 2008 standards CTC: Foreign Transcript Evaluation Approved Agencies

Work Experience 3 years working in the Industry Sector
1 year hours May be paid or volunteer May be part-time or full time May be self-employed or avocational Recency of work experience 1 year within the last 5 years Or 2 years within the last 10 years

Work Experience Alternatives
Recency Requirement Alternatives for up to 1,000 hours Work experience College-level, related to industry, coursework Occupational Internship Career-technical teaching experience May substitute up to 48 semester units of postsecondary career-technical training related to the Industry Sector for a maximum of 2 of the 3 years of work experience

Work Experience Alternatives
May substitute an advance industry certificate related to the Industry Sector for 1 year of work experience OR May substitute one year of full-time general education K-12 teaching experience in a public or private school for 1 year of work experience

Work Experience Alternatives
Substitutions/alternatives may be used for up to 2 years of work experience, but at least 1 year (1,000 hours) must be actual work experience in the industry sector.

DS CTE Clear Credential with SDAIE
Possession of 3-year preliminary Verification of successful teaching (4 terms / 2 years) Completion of program approved under August standards U.S. Constitution (2 semester unit course or exam) Health Education including CPR for adult, child and infant Computer Technology requirement Recommendation by a Commission-approved program sponsor

Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) Authorization
Authorization now added to Clear DS CTE issued under new standards Equivalent to Certificate of Completion of Staff Development (CCSD) authorization for Designated Subject Credentials CCSD Variable-Term Waiver Available to authorize SDAIE instruction while working on Preliminary with adequate progress toward Clear (new standards) or if previous DS CTE/Vocational Ed held while earning CCSD

National Board Certification
Teachers who are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards may apply directly to the Commission for a Clear Teaching Credential by submitting: Photocopy of National Board Certification Completed application (form 41-4) Appropriate application processing fee

CTE Program Funding Requirements
Be staffed by qualified CTE teachers who Possess a standard secondary, single-subject or designated-subject credential which authorizes the teaching of the CTE course(s) to which assigned, and Can document employment experience, outside of education, in the career pathway addressed by the program or other evidence of equivalent proficiency
