4 Learning Outcomes To design an environmentally sustainable building
To investigate how different focus groups will economically benefit from the Olympics Judge and justify the Dragon’s den winner

5 Starter Watch the following video Introducing the Olympic Village Write down on your post it: 1) Your favourite building and why? 2) Your favourite part of the park and why? In what ways could... 3) the building be sustainable? 4) the park be a sustainable?

6 Creating a new building for the London Olympic Village...
OUR TEAM TASK OVERVIEW 4 LESSONS... You will work in a group of 5. (6 groups). Your activity is also explained on your Dragons Den Worksheet. You have to create a sustainable tourist building that will be situated in the ‘Olympic village’ for the London 2012 Olympics. You have to design the building and present it. Your team will design your sustainable building with annotations on the sugar paper and write a sales pitch for the presentation. Your first lesson (today) will be on researching the Olympic village, choosing your ‘slant’, brainstorming ideas and getting your design started. Next lesson you will finish your design with all annotations, you will also start writing your speech. The lesson after that you will delegate speech roles, and practice your pitch to a level in accordance with your criteria sheet. Your final lesson will be presenting your pitch to the dragons who will assess you and level you. You will work to the criteria sheet in order to get the investment from the dragons a high level and some rewards! Each group will take in turns to be dragons.

7 My Teamwork Schedule MAIN TASK
Chose a building – Use pictures/Maps/Websites Chose your Slant (Focus) – Use own knowledge to help you Brainstorm all ideas on how your building will be – a) Environmentally Friendly (to include in illustrations) b) Economically Friendly (to include in speech) 4) Brainstorm all your ‘slant’ pointers/ideas to help. 5) Plan (in rough) then design your map/illustration/visual aids with annotations around of your building and its surrounding area. – Use websites on making homes and businesses more sustainable to help. 6) Write your speech, delegating who will say what. Practice it 7) Presentations (your business pitch) and Dragons assessment The team with the highest investment will be the winners! They will have their Olympic Dream established!

8 THINKING ABOUT MY TASK Your Team Prompt Help Sheet! You will have to give good, clear, realistic, reasons as to why your building is sustainable and convincing to the Dragons when you present in the den. Every group has to make their new building 1) Environmentally friendly and 2) Economically Friendly SO YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR NEW BUILDING IS GOING TO BE SUSTAINABLE IN THESE 2 WAYS. HOWEVER! Your team must ASLO chose one of the following ‘slants’ as listed below. This slant is what your team will focus on throughout your design, annotations and speech. So here are a few pointers to think about in your team to help you in your ‘slant’ for your new building! ALSO think about what unique selling point your building will have. You need to minimise the negative impacts and maximise the positive on the economy and the environment.

9 My Teams ‘Slant’ For Profit 2) For Community Youth Groups 3) Disabled
Pointers to consider (you don’t have to do all) For Profit How will your building be a successful business that makes profit? How will you cover all your building costs? How will local businesses profit from connections with your new building? How will people be able to earn a wage in your building? Forms of Trade in and out of your building? 2) For Community Youth Groups How will different youth groups benefit from your building after the games have finished? How can youth groups be educated outside of school by your new building project? How can local youth clubs participate in the olympics as they are happening? How will that involve your building? 3) Disabled How will people with disabilities move around the village safely? Wheelchair access around your new building? Fire exits? How can local schools use your building for students with different disabilities? 4) For Tourism How will you advertise to attract more tourists to visit your building? What decent attractions will there be to provide lasting enjoyment for tourists? How can tourists feel as though they are making a positive contribution to the Olympics whilst they are visiting? 5) For the Environment How will your building blend into the environment? How will you power your building with sustainable energy? How will you make your building look and feel ecologically friendly in the inside and outside? How will environmental projects around the world benefit from your initiative? 6) For the Elderly How will the elderly move around the Olympic village quickly? Safely? Affordably? What special privileges will retired people get? How can the elderly feel safe at night in and around your building?

10 The Dragons Marking Sheet!
PEER ASSESSMENT The Dragons Marking Sheet! When judging the team pitches you as the one with the money (!) are looking for quality sound ideas that will work. You must judge based on valid reasons and suggestions. Be honest and give constructive feedback. *Look for good reasons for you to invest in their 1) Annotations and 2) During their Speech* Does their pitch preserve jobs in the present and also create opportunities and jobs in the future? Group Valid Reasons Total Reasons Level Dragons Investment Justification & Suggested Improvements 1 2 3

11 MY TARGET Presenting “Valid Reasons” *You must give valid reasons why your building is sustainable throughout your ) Annotations and 2) During your Speech. The dragons will be looking for this!* My Criteria Sheet The underlined words are the linking words which give these reasons more detail and cause these answer to be a high level 7 or level 8 explanation. Amount of Investment Level Awards £200,000 L7 = 12 Valid Reasons 7 stamps for each of your team members £100,000 L6 = 10 Valid Reasons 4 stamps for each of your team members £50,000 L5 = 8 Valid Reasons 2 stamps for each of your team members £30,000 L4 = 6 Valid Reasons 1 stamp for each of your team members £10,000 L3 = 4 Valid Reasons 0 stamps for each of your team members! Must try harder! Examples of: A Valid Environmental Reason - This building will use locally sourced recycled materials. Therefore less wood is taken from unsustainable forests. This in turn reduces the carbon footprint of the building. A Valid Economically friendly Reason - Because our building will use locally sourced sustainable materials local businesses will prosper. This then leads to the multiplier effect of more local jobs and a higher disposable income for people in the community.

12 Getting Started Look for maps and virtual tours Useful websites: – (Sustainable features in a building)

13 Have we met our Learning Outcomes?
