Successful University-District partnerships to Prepare School Principals: September 13, :30 p.m. EST Rod will introduce participants and provide closure at end

Participants Tricia MCManus is the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Leadership and Professional Development In the Hillsborough County Public Schools. She oversees all recruitment, hiring, development, and evaluation of school and district leaders as well as the development of all teachers and instructional support staff. Jennifer Gripado serves as the Elementary Instructional Leadership Director in the Tulsa, Oklahoma Public Schools. She has been both a teacher and a principal. In her current role, Jennifer is the district’s project manage for the School Leader Grant Program and the Wallace Foundation Grant. Angela is moderator

University Partners Jodi Lamb spent 27 plus years working in public school districts. Among her roles and contributions was work as staff developer for principals. Currently, Dr. Lamb is an associate professor in the Graduate Studies of Education Department at Saint Leo University. Saint Leo works in partnership with the Hillsborough County Public Schools. Fern Aefsky is Associate Professor and Director of Education at Saint Leo University. Dr. Aefsky has over 35 years of experience as a public school teacher and administrator including her work as a School Superintendent. Dr. Aefsky works with the Wallace Principal Pipeline Initiative and with HCPS. Dr. William Black is a professor at the University of South Florida which institution also partners with the Hillsborough County Public Schools and with the PPI. Dr. Black is faculty in the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program. He is coordinator of the Doctoral program and co-facilitator of the USF Professional Learning Alliance which is supported by the Wallace Foundation. Dr. Joyce Haines is an instructor and the Masters Program Coordinator in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at USF. Having been a teacher, principal and district administrator, in diverse settings, Dr. Haines has substantial experience in selecting and mentoring school administrators.

As a leader in a school district or at a partner University, what would you identify as the key results of your University/School District collaboration around issues of principal preparation? What positive impact has the existence of the PLC and the opportunity to hold conversations with districts and institutions around the country had on principal preparation and performance in your experience? Tricia will start – Fern or Jodi and Bill re : question one Florida – universities do not do principal prep that is level 2 Question # 2 – Jennifer – can discuss this - all will jump

How do you measure changes that have occurred as a result of your partnerships, the PLC and the opportunity to interact across educational levels and with colleagues around the country? How have these initiatives impacted the preparation programs at partner universities? How has the new focus at the university with the advent of new standards and your partnership, impacted the district as you prepare or assist in the preparation of principals and district leaders? Fern will start this – re resurrected program w/ Wallace then – partnership question – Bill or Joyce –shifting nature of programs as a result of partnerships Re PLC – what do we already know and what is the national conversation? Question 2 – Tricia – district perspective Question – Florida has it’s own standards - Bill – or hybrid standards –how is this negotiated? Jennifer – spent time looking at nat”l standards and evaluation of ILD.

How have the actions in your university principal and leadership preparation programs impacted teacher performance and student learning? How do you know? At the district level, how have the partnership and changes in your activities as well as the university approach and communication impacted teacher performance and student learning? Bill speak to MA level – GCP – race to top and other partnerships – full time admin interns Following initial placement in what kinds of school Tricia – qualitative data – impact of coaches on principal practice….we are getting to that point Bill – community school – climate change and teacher retention –case studies ???

Are there data to demonstrate these changes, whether anecdotal, qualitative, and/or quantitative? How do you share these? With Whom? What has been the impact of these partnerships been in terms of universities and programs between and within universities? Amazing stories re climate data and working conditions – amazing gains (Tricia) and climate survey data Improvement in % of h.s. grads. – culture shifted! Twitter and social media Bill – chapter written/ doc students doing research – Fern series of books on school partnerships EDS cohort project or research? USF capstone project? Shared back with district leaders

A final question: How will you know when you are successful in your efforts to improve the role and skills of principals and principals themselves? Tricia - When not one student is not successful When every student graduates w/ a successful teacher Bill – screening data from district, we know who is successful etc. getting feedback look on various aspects over time
