What is Canvas? Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) for teacher and staff development. Canvas is intended to bring many tools and resources into one place Canvas is not replacing face to face meetings and PD; Canvas should be used to augment, enhance, and support face-to-face PLC Meetings and Professional Development. In our district, teachers will build online lessons for students using Google Classroom. The vision and purpose of Canvas is to provide a learning and collaboration space for teachers and staff members. EBR Technology Integration Team
5
Why Canvas? EBR Technology Integration Team
6
Canvas Purpose and Vision
Canvas is designed to provide all EBR employees with professional learning opportunities that are: High Quality Ongoing Relevant Supported Timely Scalable Characteristics of Successful Professional Development Programs (Guskey, 2000; Darling-Hammond, 2010) High-quality Ongoing Relevant to Daily Work Supported Timely and Cost Effective Scalable EBR Technology Integration Team
7
Why Canvas? Time – in face to face PD the time is set
We know that time represents a significant factor Online/Blended PD Environment – teachers and staff can learn new material at their own pace In face to face PD, there is little flexibility to extend or expand the available time. Time on task – impacts the quality and quantity of learning EBR Technology Integration Team
8
Why Canvas? Collaboration
In traditional face-to-face PD, if we don’t interact with peers or the instructor during the live session, our opportunities to do so again are often very limited. Canvas can provide our teachers with many more opportunities to interact with the instructor, peers, or other experts (e.g., content experts). This is critical for implementation of new learning when a face-to-face session is complete. Ending isolation Communities of Practice – teachers learning from teachers EBR Technology Integration Team
9
Why Canvas? Choice and Flexibility
Teachers survey data clearly indicate that teachers prefer to have choices The classroom should not look like all learners doing the same thing at all times. Why does Professional Development replicate that model? Effective models of PD: Acknowledges experience Provides flexibility Includes teacher voice and choice EBR Technology Integration Team

Canvas Implementation Tips
Please Consider… Adding a quick link to Canvas to your school or department webpage Posting signs with the district Canvas website url visible until teachers and staff become familiar with it Sharing the hyperlink in an Share the Accessing Canvas handout via When EBR implemented OnCourse in 2013, the PD and the IT departments received hundreds of phone calls from schools asking one simple question: Oncourse….How do we get to that website? Ensuring that teachers and staff know where to go online to access Canvas greatly reduce employee frustration and confusion with change and new programs. EBR Technology Integration Team
