3 Introduction Whenever we talk about world of Air Transport
Millions of Passengers Thousands of flights daily None stop Increment of Passengers year after year A Big challenge to ensure smooth flights flow to the highest safety standards SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

4 Introduction This is Triggers the Continuous Integration of
Coordination for Evacuation, securing safety measures & alarms Early detection of risks Development of Risk response This is Triggers the Continuous Integration of SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

5 Fire Introduction Considering Airport fire safety Facts
SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016 Introduction Considering Airport fire safety Facts Fire Fire is one of the biggest risks in airport operation Single fire spark could cause huge loss in lives and in investments Maintaining fire free & fire response plan is one of the worlds biggest challenges in Airports field Fire is not only about damages, but huge consumptions of the resources SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016 Adnan Al Rahma, Safety & Fire Protection Requirements for Airports Facilities & Projects under construction

6 Fire In Airports History (Some Ex.)
Düsseldorf Airport fire , Germany-1996: Fire broke out inside the passenger terminal killing 17 people with 100 causalities. 1,000 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze  Total damage was estimated at 570 M$. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

7 Fire In Airports History (Some Ex.)
Nairobi airport fire, Kenya 2013 fire broke out inside the main terminal building destroying two of the three units contained in the building. Minor causalities ,No one was killed, Total damage was estimated at 29 M$. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

8 Fire In Airports History (Some Ex.)
Kuwait International Airport Fire, 2016 Fire broke out inside the cargo terminal of KIA, No injuries, but some little financial losses Kuwait International Airport Fire, 2002 large fire broke out at KIA which led to the traffic stop at the airport. All flights has been diverted to Bahrain international airport. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

9 Airport Fire fighting facts
Due to the importance of the topic each Airport has a dedicated fire department by their Airport operator (apart from the Government civil defense) The airport fire department is responsible both for fire protection and for technical support of flight operations as well as all buildings and facilities in the airport area. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

10 Airport Fire fighting facts
1M liters of water for production of a film-forming foam flow rate of 11,200 liters kilograms of extinguishing powder must be kept on reserve on three vehicles. Approximately 8000 L / Min at 10 Bar the intervention time under emergencies shall not exceed 180 seconds in all areas. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

11 Fire safety requirements in airport facilities
Terminal Buildings One fire location for small areas , two for more. Manual /automatic fire alarms to be installed across all airport facilities , with location identification Number of firefighters can reach up to 160 with 30 vehicles Automatic fire extinguishing equipment smoke ,fire and heat extractors rolling fire doors The elevators automatically go to emergency exits floor locations supply lines for wet and dry extinguishing SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

12 Fire safety requirements in airport facilities
Baggage sorting area Sprinkler systems distribute the required water volume for a high- coverage sprinkler network The tower Early warning system, a safety stairwell and smoke extraction equipment. In addition, it is equipped with fire protection facilities as typically installed in high-rise buildings and dry and wet risers. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

13 Fire safety requirements in airport facilities
Aircraft maintenance hanger Equipped with several foam and water cannons that can be operated from a firefighting command post. Refueling Facilitates  Stationary foam and sprinkling systems and reservoir for extinguishing water. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

14 Fire safety requirements in airport facilities
Extinguishing water supply In addition to the drinking water supply system, a separate extinguishing water network is in place with three underground basins, each holding 2000 cubic meters of water. The pumps deliver a combined volume of 60,000 L/M t a pressure of 7 bar. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

15 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
The fire potential dangers are particularly severe on many construction sites, where high-risk activities such as hot work are frequently combined with circumstances, fires can spread quickly and escape may be difficult. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

16 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
Key stakeholders on airport construction safety and fire prevention. Contractors Airport construction authority (Airport Operator) Federal Airport Association (FAA) SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

17 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
Safety Roles of Contractors The contractors have responsibility to promote workplace safety. Signs compliance forms on the relevant Federal and State safety measures. Provide detailed plan including parties that will be responsible in the management of fire outbreak and other unforeseen disasters. Allocation of Safety officers or construction inspector. Ensures no authorized persons enter the construction site SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

18 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
Fire risk assessment Identify the hazards Identify the fire risk & people in risk Reduce the risks of fire occurring & on people Record, Plan , Inform & Train SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

19 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction There are two ways of addressing fire in construction: 1- Prevent it 2-Deal with it Reducing ignition sources Reducing Smoking, Reducing the usage of Plant and equipment, reducing Electrical installations. Reducing potential fuel sources Reducing the amount of combustible material, changing flammability of materials as they are used, reducing the storage flammable materials SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016 Adnan Al Rahma, Safety & Fire Protection Requirements for Airports Facilities & Projects under construction

20 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
When Escape route falls under sheeted scaffold, avoid covering the access: Smoke can escape Fire service can gain access Most construction rubbish can burn, make sure to remove them all at the earliest SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

21 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
ABCD Check List for Daily Monitoring SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

22 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
General fire precautions Assembly points Emergency sings Fire Alarms Fire-fighting equipment Coordination with the fire service SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

23 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
Buildings over 18 m (1 hour fire-resisting Material) Self-closing doors (30 minutes of fire resistance) Escape route should be obstacle free with self closing doors, as opened door route can quickly be filled with fire smoke. SFPE- SAC 6th International Safety & Fire Protection Conference, November 2016

24 Fire Safety requirements in Airport project under Construction
