6 Homework check Homework – you should have researched two famous experiments involving animals. E.g. Pavlov’s dogs, Skinner’s pigeons, Hobson and McCarley’s cats, Jones’s rat and rabbit, Mineka et al’s monkeys etc – there are literally hundreds!

7 Learning objectives To learn about ethical issues with laboratory experiments using animals. To learn how to solve these ethical issues.

8 Ethical issues with animals
What do you think psychologists and researchers need to consider with regards to using animals in experiments? How might these issues be different to humans?

9 Experiments using animals: ethical issues p142-143
1) What are the 4 main ethical considerations with regard to animals? 2) For each of these, explain what they mean and give at least one example from one of the experiments we have looked at. 3) What is meant by social isolation? Why is this necessary? 4) Why do you think only some species of animals are used in experiments and not others? Give at least 3 reasons. 5) From your knowledge of Pavlov’s experiments on the salivation of dogs, what ethical issues did this raise? 6) A researcher is studying social learning in birds. She needs to isolate her animals so they can’t learn from one another. Her choices are robins or sparrows. Which should she choose and why?

10 Experiments using animals: ethical issues p144-145
7) What are the main reasons for using animals in experiments? 8) Make a revision card which summarises which of the 5 reasons (strengths) outlined in the book. 9) What is the main weakness of animal experiments? Be able to explain this issue carefully. You can make a revision card for it if that is helpful. 10) Derek wants to apply his findings from a study on animals to humans. Should he use monkeys or mice? Explain your answer. 11) Describe an experiment done on animals that could not have been done on humans. Explain your answer.

11 Animal enrichment What benefits does it bring?

12 Homework Find out about Jones’ study
