6 marks - 2 EXPLAINED points.
ESSAY QUESTIONS 6 marks - 2 EXPLAINED points. EG Kennedy was worried that the Russians were planning to put nuclear missiles on Cuba. THIS WAS BECAUSE Cuba was only 90 miles from the USA. THIS MEANT THAT Russian missiles could reach US cities like Chicago and New York for the first time. In addition, the USA was worried that the USSR was expanding its influence into ‘America’s backyard’ – South America. THIS WAS BECAUSE the USSR had already taken over Eastern Europe in the 1940s and the Berlin Wall had just been built by the Russians to divide East Berlin from West Berlin. THIS MEANT THAT Kennedy was determined to stand up to Russia. 4 marks Make two developed points. EG Relations between Cuba and America got worse between 1959 and 1962. THIS WAS BECAUSE Castro nationalised the American businesses on Cuba. THIS MEANT THAT America stopped trading with Cuba and tried to stop other nations trading with Cuba as well. Finally in 1961 the CIA trained Cuban exiles to invade Cuba.

Kennedy appeared to have won the Cuban missile crisis. THIS WAS BECAUSE the Russian warships turned back from Cuba in the full glare of the world’s publicity. THIS MEANT THAT Khrushchev looked to have been humiliated. In fact, Khrushchev was forced to resign as President of the USSR in 1964 as a result. No Russian missiles were ever put on Cuba. EG Khrushchev did, however, achieve many of his aims. THIS WAS BECAUSE he forced the USA to remove their nuclear missiles from Turkey. THIS MEANT THAT the USSR was less under threat than before. He also got the USA to promise not to invade Cuba. THIS MEANT THAT Castro was safe to develop Communism in ‘America’s backyard’. In fact, both nations realised how close they had come to nuclear war and set up a hotline between Moscow and Washington . THIS MEANT THAT communications between the two countries improved. They also set up the Test Ban Treaty to try and stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons. However, they continued to try and increase their influence in small wars, for example in Vietnam.
