Key Stage 1 National Curriculum Tests Workshop

What is Tested? The tests form an assessment of Reading, Writing and Maths at the end of Key Stage 1. We call them ‘quizzes’. They provide a ‘snapshot’ of your child. Your child’s class teacher’s assessment of your child is on-going and is mainly used to assess your child.

Six Papers English grammar, punctuation and spelling x2
English reading x2 Mathematics x2 Everyone takes the same paper. The papers test the contents of KS1 National Curriculum (Years 1 and 2). The expectation is that everyone will pass all the test papers to be in line with National Expectations.

What will be tested? Knowledge of vocabulary to understand texts.
READING What will be tested? Knowledge of vocabulary to understand texts. Identify and explain key aspects of fiction/non-fiction texts (such as characters, events, titles and information). Identify and explain sequence of events in texts. Make inferences from the text. Predict based on what read so far.

How can you help your child?
Reading Read with your child EVERY day. Ask questions to ensure that they understand what they have read. Check their understanding of words used in the text. Encourage your child to think about what is inferred within the text. Lots of our home readers have guidance at the back or on the inside cover to support you.

How can you help your child?
Writing Help your child to learn their weekly spellings and Phonics. Encourage your child to use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and a full stop at the end. Correct your child’s spoken language especially tenses .e.g. I eatted/ I ate. Discuss the word classes eg. Verb, noun… Reinforce correct pencil grip and correct letter formation.

How can you help your child?
Maths Help your child to learn their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Ensure they are fluent in their number bonds to 10 and to 20. Ensure they know doubles and halves up to 20. Help your child to be familiar with money. Add and take away two digit numbers. Help your child to tell the time. Encourage your child to measure objects, fluids and temperature, recognising standard units of measure.
