1 Starter: In pairs, think of what the advantages and disadvantages may be of drawing God.

2 What are the advantages and disadvantages of drawing God?
An image gives you a mental image of God. An image can help someone understand God. Pictures help people feel God is with them. Pictures can deepen people’s ideas of God.

3 What are the advantages and disadvantages of drawing God?
How can you draw something you cannot see? The image might not match people’s understanding of God. God is greater than everything so pictures could limit people’s understanding. Pictures can stereotype God.

4 Concepts of God in Hinduism
Starter: In pairs, create a mind map of all the characteristics that people link to God e.g. powerful.

7 What do Hindus believe about God?
Hindus believe that there is one God. It is called Brahman. Brahman contains everything: creation and destruction, male and female, good and evil, movement and stillness. Because there are so many aspects of God, there are lots of deities to represent aspects of him.

8 The Trimurti There are three main aspects of Brahman (God) expressed through the Trimurti: * Brahma, the creator * Vishnu, the preserver * Shiva, the destroyer

13 Shiva Symbolism is used a lot in pictures of Hindu deities.
Symbolism is where there is an item or object which represents something else. TASK:- In pairs, look at your picture of Shiva. What do you notice? Label anything you notice, and any symbolism you can see. Shiva

14 Fire shows destruction.
The dance symbolises the order of creation. Flame circle represents the never-ending cycle of life and death. The drum shows how one sound began creation. Shiva dances on the demon of human ignorance. Snake symbolises power.

15 The Trimurti Shiva destroys
Draw a diagram illustrating how the Trimurti create, preserve and destroy to keep the circle of life going. Vishnu preserves Brahma creates Shiva destroys

16 Imagine you could create a new Hindu God, which would represent one or more aspects of the One God.
What aspect of God would they represent? What would he or she look like? How would you use symbolism (items that represent something else). Would he or she have any special skills? Would he or she carry any tools? What would be their method of transport? Would they have a partner? Create a quick sketch with labels describing the symbolism you have used.
