2 First of all, “Thanks” Many of you implemented changes in Subject Codes for the current school year that were discussed last year at GuidanceFest and Transcripting workshops Many Technology Centers are now sending excel sheets to high schools containing updated information on their Subject Codes We are continuing to update the list for and it should be ready for you by February 1st

4 The ‘kids’ are back! Clear you mind of all your job responsibilities.
The ‘Kids’ represent the students in your school. Take the blank piece of paper and answer these questions: If you had just one class period to talk to your students, what information would you share with them that would help them be better prepared for life? If we pulled a random student from your school and ask them how many times a year they got to talk/hear from the counselor, what would they say?

6 It’s a Good Time for the School Counseling Profession.
White House will acknowledge National School Counselor of the Year for the 3rd time in January 2017. Oklahoma State Testing Program National conversations about Career and Postsecondary Counseling for students. Many states are seeing pro-school counseling program legislation being passed.

8 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
How does ESSA support rigorous academics and CTE content in the classroom? Allows for direct student services to expand access to CTE coursework Supports Development of Coordinated Instructional Strategies Recognizes CTE as component of well-rounded education Expands access to CTE and academic programs through technology Promotes CTE in literacy education and expanded learning opportunities

Encourages school districts to offer college and career guidance programs Promotes career awareness and exploration activities Supports training for Counselors on using Labor Market Information to advise students on postsecondary and career goals Promotes efforts to increase financial literacy for students Increases awareness of Federal Financial Aid opportunities

10 ESSA How does ESSA support measures of career readiness in accountability systems? Aligns state academic standards with relevant CTE standards Allows for indicators of career readiness in state accountability systems Provides opportunity to develop or expand existing state efforts to measure student career readiness Allows for CTE accountability indicators on State/District Report Cards

11 Colorado Study to Increase School Counselors
State funded grant provided $16 million 59 schools between Keep student engaged and chart a course toward college and career. Money spent to bring in more middle school and high school counselors

12 Colorado - continued Grant helped keep 995 at-risk students in school and sent many of them to college. Lowered counselor/student ratio: from 1:363 to 1:216 OKLAHOMA average is 1:421, 2013 Program saved taxpayers more than $319 million in lost taxes, spending on welfare, incarceration and health care.

13 Cedar Falls - Mississippi
Using data to advocate and inform stakeholders. Showed college the loss in money from students not enrolling and college funded a school counselor one day during the summer to assist with summer transition. Added a college admissions advisor on campus every week. StudentTracker

College Readiness: HS Graduation Rates increased from 49% to 78.8% after schools implement the ASCA National Model Four-year college enrollment rate increase from 2.3% to 17.5% when an additional HS counselor is hired

½ of all Americans live 18 miles or less from their mothers ½ of your students may very well be employed in your area Have you ever had a conversation with employers from your area? What are they looking for in an employee? Are they on your advisory committee?

Key Objective 3: Career-focused Accountability Systems Accountability system could include the number and percent of students who have an individual academic career plan Accountability system could include college and career readiness indicators Student recognitions and incentives for developing and demonstrating career readiness State’s graduation rules could require students’ demonstration of career readiness

25 NSFY Grant Form a collaborative college and career advising approach among regional postsecondary institutions, career partners and secondary schools Provide support and training that prepares counselors to provide advising that reflects a shift to a career pathways focus Initiate a statewide expectation that every secondary student has an Individual Career Pathways Plan that sets a career pathway goal.

26 Oklahoma NSFY Next Steps:
Businesses will work in tandem with educators to update career pathways to reflect the most important needs in the business sector. Counselors and other educators will be empowered to assist all students in creating and updating a career pathway. Students will benefit from exploring careers as early as elementary school, and maintain that focus throughout their education process.

28 NSFY Grant Grant submission is in October. However, the state seems to be moving to career pathways regardless if SDE receives the grant or not.

29 SB 1269 - College and Career Endorsement
A student may earn a college and career endorsement by satisfying the curriculum requirements in any of the following categories: STEM, Business and industry, Public services, Arts and humanities, Multidisciplinary studies, or Any other area of study as determined by the State Board of Education SDE, ODCTE, OSRHE will specify the curriculum requirements for each endorsement. CareerTech courses can qualify (SBE discretion) Effective Nov. 1, 2016

30 AIM Act of 2016 (HB 2535) Creates the Apprenticeships, Internships, and Mentorships (AIM) Act of Authorizes the governing body of each public, private, magnet, charter, or virtual school to enter into an agreement with private or public organizations for the purpose of creating apprenticeships, internship, and mentorship programs for high school juniors and seniors beginning in the school year.

31 Steps to begin… Start with the Individual Career Plan Rubric to see where you think your school counseling program currently fits Assess what career development is currently going on in your school (CTE teachers, teachers, student groups, Technology Centers, tribes, college and career fairs, military, etc.)… LEVERAGE IT!!! Develop a team (counselor, admin, teachers, business) Attend Professional Development on career pathways and research best practices

32 Steps to begin… Attend training on OK Career Guide and share best practices Assess students on career development before and after your activities (so you can measure growth) Develop a plan Partner with others in implementation of your plan Use resources available (OK Career Guide, ACT and PreAct reports, other assessment results, etc.) Take it one step at a time Contact us if you need assistance
