1 Elements, Compounds, & Mixtures
What does it all mean?

2 elements compounds mixtures
All matter can be classified into one of the following: Note: These are different from the 4 phases that all matter exists in! elements compounds mixtures Example: Element = oxygen (gas) Compound = water ( H2O / liquid) Mixture = salt water (H20 + NaCl)

3 Atoms Atoms are the building blocks of all matter!

4 Elements An element is made up of a bunch of atoms that are all the same kind of atom. They are bonded together. Bond

5 Compounds A compound is made up of different kinds of atoms.
Bond Compounds A compound is made up of different kinds of atoms. They are chemically bonded together. They often have different properties than the elements that make them up.

6 Mixture A mixture contains a variety of elements and compounds.
They are not chemically combined and can be separated. An example would be salt water. I can physically separate the salt out of the water. It does not go through a chemical change that can’t be reversed easily.

7 Let’s try this & see how it works…
Let’s practice building & identifying them!

8 How are they alike & different
Elements Compounds Mixtures Elements Mixtures Compounds

9 Exploring Elements & Mixtures
The change is physical only & can be undone! A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically combined. substances held together by physical forces, not chemical No chemical change takes place Each item retains its properties in the mixture They can be separated physically Exploring Elements & Mixtures Materials: Element = iron Mixture = sand & rock Compound = water

10 Barren Wasteland Your Challenge:
The year is 3050 and the Earth has undergone some dramatic changes. The land is desolate and the citizens are struggling to survive. With few jobs available, you decide that you will take what you can from the land and try to earn a few dollars. You have discovered a plot of land that contains valuable iron. The problem is that it is mixed in with sand & rock. You know that if you separate the rock, sand, and iron, you can sell all three for cash. But how exactly can you do this? Your challenge is to separate the iron, sand, and rock into 3 distinct piles so that they can be sold for a profit. Work with your group to devise a plan. Barren Wasteland

12 Compounds Pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Made of elements in a specific ratio that is always the same Has a chemical formula Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically H2O NaCl CO2
