2. Matter vs. Energy
Natural Resources could be considered forms of Matter
But what about the Energy they “create”…?
In your notebook compare & contrast Matter vs. Energy…discuss with those around you

3. Natural Resources
Natural resource - any energy source, organism, or substance found in nature that people use
If these resources are used faster than they are replaced, they will run out.

4. Renewable Resources
Renewable resource- a natural resource that can be replaced in nature at about the same rate it is used

5. Examples of Renewable Resources
Sunlight (Solar)
Wind
Water (Hydro)
Trees and other plants
Animal waste (Biomass)
Geothermal
Hydrogen Fuel Cells

6. Nonrenewable Resources
Nonrenewable resource- a natural resource that is used up faster than it can be replaced in nature

7. Examples of Nonrenewable Resources
Coal
Oil (Fossil Fuels)
Natural gas
Uranium (Fuels Nuclear Power)
Minerals and rocks

8. Generation Bean
You have a cup with a number on the bottom – 1, 2, 3 or 4
Generation 1’s come up and fill your cup with as many beans as you like
Followed by generation 2, then 3, then 4

9. Generation Bean What’s the problem?
If you took a full cup, that is enough natural resource energy for you, your children and your grandchildren…and you just used it for you 
If you took a half cup, that is enough for you and your children…and you wasted it 
If you took about a quarter cup, or just a couple beans that means you have enough for you AND you have conserved natural resource energy for future generations…yay!!! 

10. Generation Bean
In your notebook (p ), predict what each color of bean may represent and based on your prediction, how could we fix this problem?

11. Can We Fix This?
Black Beans – represent oil, coal, natural gas. You should have the most of those since those are what we use the most of
Are they renewable or non-renewable?
So can we put any back?

12. Can We Fix This?
Red Beans – represent water. You should have the second most of those since that is the next most used resource.
Are they renewable or non-renewable?
So we should be able to put them all back right…????

13. Can We Fix This?
White Beans – represent electricity…we use A LOT of electricity in the United States compared to the rest of the world
Is something like electricity renewable or non-renewable?

14. Question: So, why don’t we use more renewable natural resources to create energy?

15. Answer: Because just like everything there are Pros & Cons to each energy source…what could they be?
In your notebook, brainstorm a list of things that would affect the energy source we chose to use…discuss with those around you

16. What is CONSERVATION?
conserving something; saving something; reduction of use
In this case – cut back on OVERUSE of ENERGY!

17. What you can do
Set your home’s thermostat a few degrees lower. For each one-degree change, your family can save up to 5 percent on your home’s heating and cooling costs!
Turn off lights and all electronics (like computers, televisions, stereos, and video-games) when you leave a room.
Use the microwave instead of the oven for cooking your meals.
Use machines like washers, dryers, and dishwashers after 8 p.m.
Open your blinds or curtains on sunny winter days to let the sun shine into your home.
Save hot water by taking short showers instead of baths.
Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.
Occasionally hold a ribbon up to the edges of your home’s windows. If air is leaking into, or out of, the house, the ribbon will move. If you find a leak, let someone in your family know so they can fix it.

18. Homework: Do some research…
1) For you homework I want you to create some type of visual to compare and contrast Energy and Matter
2) AND bring in at least 1 website that discusses the pros and cons of different energy sources along with your technology

My Resource: Biodiesel powered cars
My Inspiration: The smog/air pollution problem AND the Rob & Big episode where they convert Big’s car to run on oil from fast food restaurants

21. Pros & Cons of Energy Sources
You must complete the initial background research on each energy source before you make the decision for your project!
You also should have brought with you a website to start your research…
