Chapter 7 Nervous System
2
Nervous System (p.121) The nervous system receives, processes, stores and transmits information coming from the body and the external world. It is composed of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
3
The neuron (p.121) The neuron is a specialized nerve cell that receives and transmits messages.
4
Neuron (p.121) Stimulus is anything that can be perceived and that can trigger a reaction. Some are internal and some are external Examples: fatigue, hunger, thirst, fear, anger, stress Examples: sound, light, heat and odors A nerve impulse is an electrical signal transmitted by a neuron. A synapse is the transition zone between two neurons. A nerve is a structure that helps transmit information.
5
Characteristics of the neuron
A neuron: Can be stimulated Is conductive Consumes a great deal of oxygen and glucose Can live more than 100 years Cannot reproduce itself
6
Transmission of Nerve Impulses (p.121)
Stimulus Axon terminal of the first neuron Nerve impulse SYNAPSE neurotransmitters Dendrites of the second neuron
7
Peripheral Nervous System (p.123)
The peripheral nervous system connects different parts of the body to the central nervous system. A sensory receptor picks up stimuli and transforms it into nerve impulses. Examples: sensory organs (eyes, ears, skin, nose, tongue) A sensory nerve transmits information from sensory receptors to the central nervous system. Example: optic nerve A motor nerve transmits impulses from the central nervous system to the muscles. Example: Allow a pupil to contract
8
Peripheral Nervous System (p.123)
Stimulus Sensory receptor Central nervous system Muscles Bright light Eye Brain Muscles that control the size of the pupil Sensory nerve Motor nerve
9
Homework Workbook p. 122 and 124
10
The Central Nervous System (WB p. 125-126)
Coordinates a major part of the nervous system activities. Made of 2 components: The brain Spinal cord
11
The Brain The brain is composed of the parts of the central nervous system located in the cranium. Includes: The cerebrum is the control centre of voluntary movement (raise your arm), sensory interpretation (ear a truck) and intelligence (problem-solving). It is also the centre of emotion (joy) The cerebellum is the centre of balance and movement coordination (walk in straight line) The brain stem is the control centre of internal stimuli as well as of involuntary movement (digestion)
12
The Spinal Cord The spinal cord is a nervous system organ that carries information from the various parts of the body to the brain. It is also the reflex centre. Reflex is a rapid and involuntary reaction to a stimulus Example: remove your hand from a hot stove A reflex arc is the path taken by a nerve impulse during a reflex. Spinal cord Spinal nerve

Homework Workbook p. 127 & 128
17
Bell Work 1- Which part of the brain is responsible for voluntary movements ? 2- Give an example of a sensory receptor. 3- Fill in the blanks: A sensory nerve transmits information from the sensory receptor to the _________________. A motor nerve transmits information from the brain to the __________________. ** Take out self-evaluation if you did not give it to Ms. Fernandez on Friday.

Quiz Thursday, November 20th, 2014 Nervous system
Neuron (the parts, function and transmission of information) Understand the meaning of terms like synapse, nerve impulse and stimulus (plus give an example) Peripheral nervous system: sensory receptor, sensory nerve and motor nerve Central nervous system: brain (different parts and functions), spinal cord, reflex arc and the path of nerve impulses
19
Experiment
22
Once you are finish the experiment….
Answer the analysis questions Write a conclusion: Is your hypothesis correct or not and indicate something you have learned in the laboratory today. Make sure you have done the graph table, wrote the hypothesis and your names. Submit all you lab reports in the basket.
23
Once you are done your quiz
Leave the quiz on the corner of your desk Remain QUIETE and do NOT disturb Read page in textbook p Do p. in workbook
