4 Experience: Taking Photographs at the Museum
Photography in Flight Experience: Taking Photographs at the Museum You will have the opportunity to take photographs both inside and outside the museum. Each group will have a volunteer to guide them. You may want to bring a flash drive or a download cord to transfer your images onto your own device so you can take them with you. Also, please upload your images to Instagram and share them with us! Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

5 Introduction: An Introduction to Photography
Photography in Flight Introduction: An Introduction to Photography The history of photography has roots in antiquity but didn’t become solidified until 1826, when Nicéphore Niépce succeeded, but his results were very crude. Fellow Frenchman Louis Daguerre went on to develop a better process, and produced clear, finely detailed results. It was commercially introduced in 1839, a date generally accepted as the birth year of practical photography. 6 Robert Cornelius’ selfie
Photography in Flight Introduction: An Introduction to Photography Photography has come a long way in less than 200 years. It has revolutionized how we see, learn, and how we understand the world around us. In the years since those two Frenchmen founded modern photography, it has gone through many changes. There are so many firsts in photography worth noting, including the first ‘selfie’ (pictured here). Take a look at the link below to learn about many of these photographic firsts. 7 Introduction: An Introduction to Photography
Photography in Flight Introduction: An Introduction to Photography Photography today encompasses so much more than ever before. Technology has advanced, and each one of us has the opportunity to be a photographer. Cameras vary in quality, but even basic cameras, which are fairly affordable, take great pictures. The phones that most of us never leave home without are our most convenient cameras. Take a look at the link below to learn more about photography today! 8 Introduction: An Introduction to Photography
Photography in Flight Introduction: An Introduction to Photography We use our phones to take quick snapshots of our everyday life. Within the last few years, with the advent of social media, there has been an explosion of photo apps hitting the market that we can use . These apps range from image posting apps like Instagram to editing apps and more! Take a look at the link below to learn about the variety of photo apps available! What app would you like to see invented? Examples of Apps Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

9 Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs
Photography in Flight Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs Everyone has the ability to take photos but some people take great pictures every time. How do they do this? They understand some basic principals of photography like composition and light. They also take into account what they want to do with their photo (see it online, print it, use it as a reference, etc.). Watch these tips from a pro below. They’re a great start to taking great pictures! Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

10 Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs
Photography in Flight Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs “Composition” describes placement of objects and elements in a work of art. Good composition requires good balance. Simply put, composing an image means arranging elements within it in a way that suits the core idea of your work best. This can be done by arranging the elements (when possible) or by moving yourself into a position to get a better composition. Composing an image eventually becomes a very natural process. With enough practice you will not even have to think about it. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

11 Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs
Photography in Flight Introduction: How to Take Good Photographs Light is also an important aspect of photography. A photograph records patterns of light, color, and shade. The direction, brightness, and color of light affect photographs. The main sources of light for photography are: daylight, which varies with the weather and the time of day continuous artificial light (incandescent, fluorescent, etc.) a bright and very brief photographic flash special purpose light: electric sparks, fireworks, moonlight, etc. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

12 Introduction: How to take good photographs
Photography in Flight Introduction: How to take good photographs There are many aspects to consider in photography. One of those is the possible output. Let’s explore some of your options: Online output: Social media posts Digital scrapbook Portfolio for a website Printed output options: Digital prints (black & white or color) Darkroom printing from film Lab prints from film Use as source materials: To plan a project For reference materials Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

13 Enrichment: A Local Legend
Photography in Flight Enrichment: A Local Legend Did you know that we have a renowned aviation photographer living right here in Fort Worth? His name is Jay Miller and he is the first person many aviation and aerospace engineering companies go to when they need beautiful shots of their new products (like fighter jets and state of the art helicopters). Jay’s career spans 50 years and he is the author of 36 books on aviation subjects. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

14 Would you ever consider a unique career like his?
Photography in Flight Enrichment: A Local Legend He has photographed every type of aircraft. These include the state of the art aircrafts made by industry giants like Lockheed and Bell. It also includes vintage aircrafts like the ones you will see today as well as cutting edge experimental crafts. Would you ever consider a unique career like his? 15 Enrichment: Vintage Aircraft
Photography in Flight Enrichment: Vintage Aircraft The museum has an amazing array of vintage and historic aircrafts. Let’s learn more about these aircrafts. The “Petting Zoo” of 25 “warbirds” spans the time period from 1943 to the present. All of these planes have a connection to North Texas. Use the link below to learn specifics about the planes you will be seeing. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

16 Enrichment: Emotion in Aircrafts
Photography in Flight Enrichment: Emotion in Aircrafts Remember, when you are looking at and photographing these historic planes, they have a history. These planes have been used in defense of our country. Along with that they really mean something to the men and women who built them, worked on them, and flew them. Try to capture some of the nostalgia and emotion of someone connected to planes like these. Will they remember their crew from the plane? Will they be excited to show off a plane they built to their family? Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

17 Projects: Interpreting photographic firsts
Photography in Flight Projects: Interpreting photographic firsts Remember on slide 6 when we learned about some photographic firsts (the link is also below). Turn history into modern art! Take a time period from photographic history or look up a historic photograph from the past and reinterpret it into a modernized drawing or painting. Be creative and have fun with your art! 18 Make your story funny and positive.
Photography in Flight Projects: Aviation Writing We have learned about aviation photographers but now lets consider aviation writing. Normally this would mean technical writing but today let’s become a different kind of aviation writer. Taking into consideration the emotions that might be associated with planes like we discussed earlier write a story about the plane or from the plane’s perspective. What would the plane want to say about it’s history, or the crew who kept her going? Humanize the plane or it’s history. Make your story funny and positive.
