2 Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) affiliate
Who We Are Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) affiliate Began over 20 years ago using a public/private partnership with each state in the US (62 centers total) FOCUS  YOU. The small and mid-sized U.S. manufacturer - to help you create and retain jobs, increase profits, and save time and money.

3 Manufacturers Extension Partnership
What is MEP? Manufacturers Extension Partnership How it all fits: FASTLANE has a contract with Ohio DSA to be the MEP affiliate for the West Central Ohio region

4 FASTLANE A team of manufacturing consultants and engineers dedicated to providing top resources and making them affordable to small and mid-size manufacturers. We work to increase revenue, accelerate technology, create jobs, and generate cost savings for Dayton area manufacturing businesses.

5 Ohio Manufacturing Ohio – MEP Map FASTLANE region

6 The Part FASTLANE Plays
Manufacturing is FASTLANE’s foundation. We are a small/medium manufacturing life line that exists to: Enhance manufacturer’s competitiveness Move quickly to find the right solutions Engage the right resources Deliver results for manufacturing businesses

8 FASTLANE: How it Works How it Works (no fee advisory services):
Introduction Meeting Face-to-face meeting, tour the facility and listen to and understand your manufacturing growth challenges Vet Opportunities: Summarize observed/discussed challenges with potential solutions Client sets priorities Define project(s) scope of work/timing Vet possible solution providers Develop a Plan: Develop a measurable, budgeted plan with milestones Project Manage: Monitor milestone accomplishment Track company success and economic impact for Ohio NIST Surveys . . .

9 Technical innovation projects Research technology transition
Tech Hub mission: The Tech Hub is a resource for aerospace manufacturers to improve competitiveness by solving technical challenges, advancing technologies and identifying suppliers. Tech Hub objectives Technical innovation projects Research technology transition Supply chain development

10 Engage clients / print parts
2015 Pilot ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PROGRAM Engage clients / print parts Analysis of business case Educational Workshop

11 Additive Manufacturing Pilot Project Strategy
Promote / Educate Leverage internal and external service bureaus in our region Fund pilot AM analysis of business case– determine if model can be a service for Ohio SMM’s Incentivize manufacturing firms to “do something innovative & get a deal” Partner with other MEP Affiliates

12 Why FASTLANE Received Funding
Situation Analysis: Supplemental funding was available Additive Mfg – hot topic Exceptional technical AM UDRI Polymers FDM – nano materials & characterization Metals Powder Bed Fusion – ferrous & non-ferrous Opportunistic Add a promo for UDRI/Fastlane – Capabilities for internal service AM’s

13 The Goal Get manufacturing companies to use Additive Manufacturing technology in a new manner within their business Just… The “Fence-sitter” Up the ladder

14 Objectives Promoted to Manufacturing Clients
Provide: Expertise Materials / Machine Technologies / Processes / Designing For Additive Manufacturing / Analysis Applications Advising New Product Development / Production Components / Tooling & Fixturing / Rapid Prototyping / Castings Engineering Services 3D Scanning / Reverse Engineering / Design / Model Optimization Financial Risk Reduction Joint Funding For Your New Application: Prototyping / Production Parts / Tooling / Molds / Fixtures Education Seminars / Hands On Learning Opportunities / Courses *Know your local service bureau capabilities.* Lessening their risk to print parts. Researched local service bureau’s to identify capabilities. Example: If it costs $4k to print/engineer AM part, MEP may give between 15%-30%. The more novel the idea, the higher % of subsidy.

15 Collateral Material Utilized the application to 1. Rate proposal and 2. Determine the level of funding.

16 Results of Projects 5 month duration: Feb-Jun
Engaged with > 100 companies (30% new clients)

17 NIST Survey Impacts Economic Impacts of Project

18 Manufacturers talking to
Workshop Manufacturers talking to Using manufacturers was a compelling way to get other manufacturers to the workshop.

19 Real Additive Manufacturing: Ohio MFG Success Stories
Things we did: Created marketing collateral, social media, etc.

20 Workshops in Dayton and Columbus 50+ Companies in Attendance
Workshop Statistics Workshops in Dayton and Columbus 50+ Companies in Attendance 100+ People Attended 2.5 hour event (7:30AM – 10AM) Additional workshop scheduled in September FASTLANE and Polymer Events combined; CIFT planning to have a workshop Sept. 23rd

21 Workshop Presenters Automotive Machining Go-No-Go Gauge
Aerospace Company Substructure Injection Molder Assembly Jig Product Prototype Prosthetic Manufacturer New Material Validation Testing Pool Pump Manufacturer Replacement Pump Parts Aerospace Company New prototype of interior cabin components Printed metal and polymer parts to validate fine detail for textures Injection Molder Printed injection mold inserts for prototyping new / revised part designs Product Development Company Prototype for new consumer retail product Companies from prosthetics and injection molders to aerospace companies printed parts as part of the program. Products included gauges, jigs, prototypes. We found the program spanned a wide range of needs and industries.

22 Why did you attend this event?
Survey Responses Why did you attend this event? “We are interested in Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) and working to figure out how/where we can use it at our company. At a minimum we want to keep current on the technology so we are ready to go when the technology is the right choice to meet our goals.” “Wanting to stay on the cutting edge of this technology for actual use in production. We have a great deal of experience with it in prototype functions.” “To learn more about UDRI and Fastlane” “I have been investigating AM for sometime with various large companies and was looking to compare my experience with that of small to mid-size companies.” Some highlights were underlined. “Previous events” “Topic of interest to me”

23 What did you like about this event?
Survey Responses What did you like about this event? “I like that we were able to interact with businesses/people that were actually using 3D printing. It was good to ask questions directly. I also like that it was a short meeting in the morning that didn't interrupt the entire workday.” “Real world applications and varying presenting companies.” “Location, time of day and networking with others.” “There was a good sampling of various manufacturing sectors.” “Presentations and knowledge of the subject.” Some highlights were underlined. “Multiple case studies, well run meeting.”

24 Additive Manufacturing Pilot Program
Quick Synopsis Additive Manufacturing Pilot Program Engaging clients and printing parts Analysis of Business Case Educational Workshop Get manufacturers to attempt new AM applications Drive new NIST projects and accompanying economic impacts Garner new clients to promote MEP Sales tool to open doors to other opportunities. Bottom Line: This was effective and how can it help you
