Clara Barton (NURSE) (PRESIDENT USA) Abraham Lincoln
My name is Clara Barton. I became a “nurse” when I learned how many of the wounded suffer terribly, because there isn’t enough medical supplies. I travel with army ambulances for the purpose of helping the sick and wounded soldiers, and nursing them." It is a brand new idea for the times. Before I started to help with the wounded and dying the conditions were terrible. In one case the doctors were using corn husks for bandages! Note: By the end of the war Barton had performed most of the services that would later be associated with the American Red Cross, which she founded in 1881. Abraham Lincoln (PRESIDENT USA) I am President of the United States. I am a Republican and was elected to office in 1860. I believe that the North will win this war. Our weapons factories and railroads are a big difference in this war for victory. We are beating the South by having more. More men, better weapons and food. Several times I have had to suspended part of the Constitution, which says that a person in a free society cannot be taken from his or her home without reason or cause. Many people are angry at me because of this, they call me King Abraham as a joke. The economy is doing well but we are suffering from “inflation” which means that the price of everything is going up. Part of that problem is that in order to pay for the war we are just printing up extra money.

(PRESIDENT CONFEDERATE STATES) (CONFEDERATE GENERAL)
Jefferson Davis (PRESIDENT CONFEDERATE STATES) My name is Jefferson Davis. I have been the President of the Confederate States and the war is has not gone well. It started off well but the factories and more men that the North has is just too much. We don’t have the modern weapons and railroads that they have. The economy is not doing very well since our main source of money is cotton. Since the North blocked the ocean and rivers we can’t sell it to anyone. In fact, my soldiers don’t have enough supplies of food, clothing or shoes and ammunition for our weapons. They are now raiding peoples homes just to survive. I am afraid we will lose this war. Robert E. Lee (CONFEDERATE GENERAL) I am Robert E. Lee, the commanding general for the Confederate Army. In my past I served in the US-Mexican and received many honors. The war is has not gone well. Just to find enough soldiers we had to pass the Draft Law, in 1862 which means anyone between had to serve for three years in the Confederate Army. I made some big mistakes in the Battle of Gettysburg up North and lost of thousands of good soldiers.. I fear that the North is just too strong and they have more factories, farms and men. Things do not look good for the south.

Newton Scott (SOLDIER for NORTH) (SOLDIER for SOUTH)
My name is Newton Scott and I am a soldier for the North. I joined the army because I believed our country should be one nation. My brother Joseph is fighting for the South and he believes that the States should be able to become another nation. Neither of us are fighting for slavery, to keep it or abolish it. My mother was very upset with both of us when we both joined up. I hope my brother is well since the South is losing the war. I was recently transferred to a unit where a “darkie” outranked me. I have a big problem with that and did not join the army to free the slaves. I don’t listen to darkies because I feel that they are inferior to whites. Louis Leon (SOLDIER for SOUTH) My name Louis Leon, I am a Southerner from Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a soldier in the 44th Georgia Regiment, called the "Charlotte Grays.” A lot of people think the war is about slavery but it isn’t, it’s about our rights as a States. 95 % of Southerners don’t own any slaves and most plantations have 20 or less slaves. There are a few large plantations that have more. I am fighting for our rights. As the war has gone on we have had a hard time fighting because we have no food, clothing or shoes like the North. Their weapons are more modern than ours and they never seem to have shortages like we do.

(WOMAN from GETTYSBURG)
Tillie Pierce (WOMAN from GETTYSBURG) My name is Tillie Pierce and this is what we found in my home after the Battle of Gettysburg. When we entered the house it was completely filled with the wounded. Near the basement door, I saw doctors lifting the poor men onto a bench, then the surgeons sawing and cutting off arms and legs, then again probing and picking bullets from the flesh. I saw the wounded throwing themselves wildly about, and shrieking with pain while the operation was going on. To the south of the house, and just outside of the yard, I noticed a pile of amputated arms and legs higher than the fence. I could have no other feeling, than that the whole scene was one of cruel butchery Dorothea Lynde Dix (IN CHARGE of NURSES) My name is Dorothea Lynde Dix. A week after the attack on Fort Sumter, at age 59, I volunteered my services to the Union and was in charge of all women nurses working in Union army hospitals. I served in that position without pay through out the entire war. I only accepted female applicants who were plain looking and older than 30. In addition, I put in place a dress code of modest black or brown skirts and forbade hoops or jewelry. I also looked after the soldiers that we had to help. Many times I got medical supplies from private sources since the government did not provide them.

(SLAVE DURING the CIVIL WAR)
George Bernard (SLAVE DURING the CIVIL WAR) I am a slave in Alabama and I am a cook on a large plantation. They say that President Lincoln of the North is trying to free us and started a war against the Southern States. My master, his sons and all of the white men around here are gone and are fighting for the South. We slaves are very scared that if we become free what will we do? Who will feed us? What will we do for clothes and shelter? What will become of our master and his wife who has always been very good to us? Tyler Smith (Black Union Soldier) I am a soldier for the 54th Massachusetts Black Regiment of the Union Army. When the Civil War first started African Americans weren’t allowed to join the army and they wouldn’t take me. After President Lincoln declared that all slaves would be set free, the army finally accepted me and other blacks who wanted to help beat the South. Many white people thought that we wouldn’t be able to fight well. We were paid less than white soldiers, our equipment was old, and our uniforms and shoes didn’t fit right. We proved our ability to fight because our unit had some of the highest death and wounded numbers of the war, and we received the most medals for our bravery out of all the Union Army units!
