Wamsley terms Set – Depth and Shoulders Eyes 1st Protect Net
“Ready to receive” Eyes 1st Body follows Protect Net Middle 1st quickest route to center of new shot lane Defines goaltenders job
7
Wamsley Terms - 2 Read Patience Situational awareness
Opposition options Your teams defensive position Patience Let play develop Down with shot save approach

3 C’s Compete Chance to win Crunch time
9
Skill 1st ! Sean Burke “ Today’s goalies taught backwards”
Position 1st Skill 2nd Canadian Goaltending Symposium 2012
10
Skill 1st Stance Has to be athletic
Knee bend, similar shin and spine angle Weight – balls of feet Width - can’t jump, can’t move Hands - out in front, in vision, level Chin down – head trajectory Stick - heel on ice
11
Skill 1st Skating C-Cuts T- Push Shuffle Pivot Butterfly slides
Power Pushes
12
Skating Most drills done in stance Head stays still Inside edge work
Hands out Stick down Head stays still No bobbing – up and down motion Inside edge work Transfer of weight Front of blade to back of blade One leg to other Try to leave shoulders square on stops Show Skating video
13
Skill 1st - Hands Out in front Elbows bent Level Glove Hand?
able to see hands with peripheral vision Elbows bent No tension in arms Level 9-3 O’clock is best for development Glove Hand? Thumb up, Fingers up, Fingers out ? Slight double coverage is OK.
14
Skill 1st - Hands Eyes Soft Hands Trap Track Let puck come you
Start on puck Read shooters blade? Follow puck Finish on Puck Soft Hands Let puck come you Trap If you ca trap you have soft hands !
15
Skill 1st Stick Acts as 3rd leg Show hands video Heel on ice
10-4 O’clock angle Acts as 3rd leg Balance tool Show hands video
16
Defend 10 Scoring Situations
Clear shot Break Away Entry Net Drive Below Goal line East West (lateral) pass North South pass Screen Deflection Rebound
17
Clear Shot An unobstructed shot where the goaltender sees the puck from the release to the net. Shooter has little or no option to advance to the net Goalie has time to get set Max depth for situation No motion back or sink required Ready to receive position Avoid center shifting and chasing wide shots? Show clear video
18
Breakaway Player is ahead of all defending players with only the goaltender to beat Max depth - plus Motion back or sink required Speed of sink depends on speed of attack Mindful of gap, avoid to deep to quick Patience required let shooter make 1st move Show breakaway video
19
Entry All situations where the puck is carried across the blue line into the zone that results in an attempt at the net. Early set on play – depth Just outside crease different spot for each goalie Let play develop as much as possible Read - potential next play puck carriers options, defensive position of teammates, what are the taking away? Show Entry video
20
Net Drives An in-zone play where the player has the ability to skate the puck all the way to the net or a better scoring area. Read puck carries options, defenders taking away Read potential depth required, more or less? Down stance? V/H, RVH or Overlap Timing into ? Show net drive video
21
BGL ( Below Goal Line ) Situation that originates along or below the goal line to either near post ( walkout ) Read options, stuff or can puck get to far post gain depth? far post (wraparound) Maintain visual on puck as much as possible Stick - paddle down help? Sliding into far post, skate blade, skate lace, shin Practice all Show BGL video
22
East West Puck that travels across the middle of the ice either passed or carried and forces the goaltender to move laterally. Read options ? Starting depth? Eyes 1st – pass can not bet eyes Helps set quickest route to middle of new shot lane Footwork to get across – depends on urgency Pivot into ? T push or shuffle with time Butterfly slide with less time Hands, stay with body Understand what shooter sees? most shots end up in middle of net
23
North South – Low High Puck that is passed from below goal line
Out stays on same side of ice Across crosses middle to other side Read – depth and position of outs Left or right shot Effects route Feet position on feet Out at dot – push to stick Across more flat – middle 1st then out ? How aggressive can you be and still be set From down stance ? Stay down
24
North South – high low Most situations are shot pass Read
Position and shooting hand of receiver Motion back or sink required Route to puck If in tight Middle of new shot lane if higher Show N/S video
25
Screens Situation where one or more players from either team disrupts the goaltenders vision as the puck travels to the net. Fight to find puck – high or low If possible look short side Leave feet as much as possible in shot lane If in doubt Protect the Net
26
Deflections A shot where the puck changes direction because of impacting a stick or player prior to reaching the net. If possible get tight to potential tip Leave stick in middle Avoid chasing puck and opening up 5 hole Original wide shots have to come back to net to score
27
Rebounds (recovery) Second chance to score off an original shot or attempt at the net. Have time, position no time, out of position Eyes 1st find puck Nothing under nothing thru (seal) Active hands with time, no time block If in doubt get something in the middle
