1 KPOC – Irvine Medical Center: Nursing Professional Practice and Engagement
PURPOSE PROCESS LEARNINGS NDNQI Nurse Engagement Survey: KPOC- Irvine Medical Center Overall Hospital Results Trended Improvement Over 3 Years for All 11 Categories After the inception of Voice of Nursing (VON) in 2014, this team took responsibility of evaluating and working to improve practice as measured by the NDNQI. The VON team determined that in order to improve practice and measures, each unit would need to identify their opportunities for improvement and create a unit specific action plan. Unit specific action plans were made through a labor and management partnership in 2015 based on the 2014 NDNQI results and 2015 thereafter. In late 2016 & early 2017, new action plans where created based on 2016 results; however, this time the team decided to have organizational alignment and for all to focus on two specific categories. Importance of emphasizing the significance of NDNQI results to nursing staff Positive impact of Peer to Peer approach for endorsing participation in the NDNQI survey Importance of nursing staff participation in developing the action plan Importance of following up with staff and managers on the action plan (at least quarterly) and facilitate re-education as needed National Database of Nursing Quality IndicatorsTM (NDNQI®) As outlined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses and Nursing Scope & Standards of Practice, “nursing has a responsibility to measure, evaluate, and improve practice” (The American Nurses Association, Inc., 2017).
