8
Through the creation of countries came a strong sense of pride for a person’s heritage and country which is known as nationalism. Germany and Italy were formally either composed of city states or smaller countries, but both unified to become countries. The start of WWI The death of WWI
9
While nationalism unified countries, it also created fierce rivalries.
Britain, France, and Russia formed an alliance , or agreement to work together, called the Triple Entente. Germany signed an agreement with Austria-Hungary and became known as the Central Powers.
10
While nationalism was a long term cause of WWI, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian extremist group called the Black Hand set forth a chain of events that led to countries declaring war on one another.
11
Once war had started, people realized the impact of new technologies on the battlefield.
Armies had to dig trenches to protect themselves from enemy machine gun fire, airplanes, tanks, and poison gas.
12
Just when Germany seemed to gain the upper hand in 1917 with Russia falling to communism and backing out of the war, the United States joined the side of the Allies. Germany surrendered the next year by signing the Treaty of Versailles. In doing so they were required to pay back billions of dollars to the Allies. This would create tensions for the decades to follow.
13
End QARs What was the alliance between Britain, France, and Russia called? What was the alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary? Whose assassination sparked WWI? What treaty ended WWI?

End Read—Pg. 278 Read through “World War II and the Cold War” then STOP. Free Pick Jobs! (Key Term, Key Fact, Summarizer, Internet Researcher, Questioner, Topic Illustrator.)
15
After WWI, Germany was devastated by war reparations, or money to cover losses suffered by the victors. Another event called the Great Depression also devastated not only Germany, but the world and severely hurt the world’s economy.
16
Hitler became the leader of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party or the Nazi Party.
After years of toying with former enemies France and Great Britain, Hitler finally invaded neighboring country Poland; in response, the Allies declared war on Germany, but was unprepared for German military strength. The start of WWII
17
The United States hoped to stay neutral in WWII and avoid any conflicts against the newly formed Axis Powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy. On December 7th, 1941, Japan attacked US forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in hopes that it would destroy the US Pacific fleet. Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
18
The United States worked to fight both Japan and Germany by helping the Soviet Union and Great Britain in Europe & the Pacific. For 5 years fighting continued and after a deadly operation called Operation Overlord, or D-Day, the Allies were able to push back the Nazis and take control of Europe. D-Day
19
Towards the end of the war in Europe, Allied troops began to find Nazi concentration camps full of nearly 6 million Jewish captives. These camps were a part of the Holocaust, a mass genocide, or killing of a particular group of people, such as the Jews.
20
End The fighting continued even after Germany fell as the United States still had to defeat Japan. Japanese culture was very much a warrior culture, but American technology and resolve would never stop advancing on Japanese territory. Realizing that the only end to the war would be a full scale invasion of Japan and the possibility of losing hundreds of thousands of American lives, President Truman decided to use the most destructive military weapon ever created.
21
The weapon used was the atomic bomb, a weapon with the payload equivalent of 16,000 tons of TNT.
22
After the two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, the Japanese leadership knew there was no stopping the American weaponry that had been created. The years after WWII would be just as tense between the united States and new rival the Soviet Union. Nuclear Tests
23
An imaginary border was established in Europe to split pro-democratic west Europe and pro-communist east Europe, this division was called the Iron Curtain. The Cold War would not end until 1991, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union.
24
End QARs What was Germany required to pay the Allies after WWI as payment for war damages? What event was responsible for the mass killing of Jews in WWII? After WWII, what imaginary boundary was created between communist nations and democratic nations?
