Educational Technology and Teaching AECT defines educational technology as “the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources” This definitions takes a broad view to include all technologies and processes that enhance and augment learning

Technology Standards for 21st Century Teaching Standards address competencies in educational technology Most frequently applied set of technology standards for students and educators are ISTE’s NETS. NETS for Teachers, Students, Administrators, and Coaches define competencies for each group Typically incorporated into statewide educational standards

Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) Offers an additional framework for technology skills and related competencies Focused on broad skill set that includes technology literacy Also includes related competencies for success in 21st century life: Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity (4Cs)

Common Core Standards Standards for K-12 math and language arts adopted by forty-five states Common Core drives state curriculum mandates Common Core standards include and integrate technology skills, they do not segregate them For example, writing anchor standard 6 states that sixth-grade students will be able to collaborate, write, and publish together via the Internet

Teacher Preparation National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)defines preparation of educators NCATE incorporates technology within the framework of its professional standards for teacher preparation NCATE partnered with ISTE in developing endorsements for technology facilitation, technology leadership, and computer science preparation NCATE and Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) merged to become Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) which recognizes technology as an essential skill

Professional Licensure and Technology Preparation States reflect No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) technology mandates in their requirements for teacher certification Requirements may be detailed in a state’s description of Accomplished Practices for educators Or states may require technology competencies and courses for certification Schools of Education prepare students for their state certification requirements but it is ultimately the educator’s responsibility

National Certification National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers national certification recognition Purpose is to improve teaching and learning by awarding national certification recognition National Board certified teachers may qualify for extra pay as determined by their district Technology is into the requirement of demonstrating diverse strategies to achieve National Board Certification

Professional Evaluation and State Recertification Technology standards and requirements are often included directly or indirectly in evaluation Each district differs in its requirements Recertification is required of every teacher Technology courses from and accredited college and in- service workshops in technology offered by a district may be applied for recertification Online technology training may offer a viable option for educator’s seeking recertification

Technology Training for Other Educators Media Specialists - Technology training is essential for media specialist who often assists teachers and their students in using the school's technology both in and outside the media center Administrators- The NETS-A standards articulate the skills and knowledge that administrators need to ensure that technology supports learning and transforms schools into 21st century institutions Tech Coaches - NETS•C articulate standards for technology coaches, facilitators, and others who assist in teacher support and school technology integration

Technology in 21st Century Schools Districts spend substantial portion of their limited resources equipping schools and classrooms with technology As of 2009, 99% of teachers reported they had computer access in their classroom (US DOE) Schools invest for district record gathering and reporting connecting district schools equipping individual schools Providing hardware and software to classrooms

Technology in 21st Century Schools Technology has diverse applications in schools including Administrative Tasks– to assist and support teacher tasks such as attendance, grade keeping, seating charts, and calendars Presentation – to support lecture and presentations via software that can display text, video, audio, links and animation on sequenced slides Create digital photo collections with audio commentary or animation Provide multimedia displays of content

Technology in 21st Century Schools Technology has diverse applications in schools including Lesson Preparation – to help create daily lesson plans and find shared online standards-correlated plans Communications – to support collaboration and communication via Social networking sites Blogs and Chats and Forums Teaching Tasks– to support and enhance classroom teaching via online tools and apps
