Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind. Learning Outcomes: Upon the completion of this training module, the user will be able to identify, understand, and apply the rules and steps found within the university’s guidelines in order to complete a degree plan for the Management Major. This module will ensure the proper governance of the university’s programs and ensure that our student population is being advised correctly. After reviewing this module, the advisor should be able to identify the purpose of the Management major, the courses within the major, specialization and professional development. The goal is for the advisor to have a good grasp on the purpose behind the major and have the knowledge to market the major to the appropriate student population. The advisor should also be able to provide details to the student about the transferability of credit and commonly used course substitutions.

Purpose of the Management (MGMT) Major
The Management Major exposes students to courses in ethics, law, leadership, human resources and vital issues to prepare them for career advancement in business or management careers in a variety of business fields. The Management major is focused on exposing the student to a variety of areas within the career field of management and business. Students wishing to work within a business dynamic, of any kind, should favor the Management major. Most military members will have military credit that can easily be transferred into the specialization of this major. The leadership and management courses that military members are expose to while on active duty makes the Management major an attractive option. The most marketable aspect of the major is that it is very broad in scope and doesn’t impost limits on the students’ career options.

Management (MGMT) Major
The 36 hour major includes a 24-semester hour core and a 12-semester hour specialization. The core courses are a set list of 8 specific areas. The 12 hour specialization must be completed from courses in either the Management or Business field of study. Of the 36 hours required for the major, 18 must be from upper-level courses. No cognates may be used in this major. It important to know that even though students have the ability to transfer in outside courses, military or testing credit, they still must meet certain rules concerning the major. Students MUST have at least 18 hours of upper level credit in the major. Student who have numerous transferrable credit hours need to be aware of the rules/restrictions. On occasion, some transferrable credit may not be used because of these restrictions.

Management (MGMT) Major Requirements:
MAJOR CORE COURSES: BUAD 3318 – Business Law BUAD 4334 – Business Ethics DANTES- Ethics in America will substitute but does not full fill upper-level requirement, list as PHIL on the degree plan MGMT 3304 – Principles of Management CLEP – Principles of Management will substitute but does not fulfill upper-level requirement, list as MGMT2304 on the degree plan. MGMT 3324 – Human Resource Management HLAD 3324 – Health Professions Human Resource Management may not be used in this major MGMT 4306 – Dynamics of Leadership MGMT 4320 – Organizational Behavior MISM 3303 – Information Systems Theory and Practice RSWR 3345 – Research Writing Methods Students who need RSWR 3345 for a degree requirement should take it as soon as feasible in the students’ enrollment with Wayland, based on prerequisite being met. This requirement moves from RSWR 3345 to an imaginative literature course, like ENGL3303, if the second half of English they have does not have a literature component. Plus Twelve (12) hours of Management or Business electives HLAD courses can not be used as business electives This is the list of the required courses within the major. This is not an exhausted list of the possible transferrable CLEP/DANTES test or military credit that can be applied to the major.

Management (MGMT) Major Requirements:
Here is an example of the major as it appears on the degree plan.

12-Hour MGMT Specialization
The Management specialization is built around 12 hours of either management or business classes. Wayland accepts courses from a wide variety of sources including Community College of the Air Force, technical and vocational schools, computer schools, and business colleges, which are regionally accredited. Nationally accredited schools must meet Wayland’s criteria to be considered. LMM courses from CCAF – 7000 and 9000 credit can be used for Management credit. Other military management courses can also be accepted for credit. Military business courses may also be considered for approved business courses. Management courses may be evaluated by referring to course prefix, title and description. If unable to determine whether the course is management by the description, send the description to the Office of BAS/BCM Records. Students do not have to transfer in the 12 hours of a specialization if your campus teaches the 12 hours for the field of management or business. Most military members who have served a minimum of 7 years will have applicable management credit to apply to their specialization. Depending on their career field, many military members will have at least the 12 credit hours to satisfy the degree requirement for their specialization. However, if a student does not have enough military credit or has no transferrable credit at all, the student will still be able to satisfy the specialization with University courses. If an External Campus does not offer enough varied management / business courses, the student may have to take an online course.

24-Hour MGMT Professional Development:
The professional development component consists of 24 semester hours selected to provide depth or breadth to the major and to provide substantive developmental knowledge for the student’s career or personal goals. Here is an example of the Professional Development portion as it appears on the degree plan.

Management (MGMT) Major Substitute Courses:
Commonly transferred CLEP / Military credit are listed below: DANTES Management Information Systems was approved as a non-academic equivalent to MISM 3303. The following courses may substitute for but do not duplicate MGMT 3324 Human Resource Management (unless otherwise stated) Personnel Management (Military) SB 544 Personnel Management (DANTES) LMM 2121 Leadership and Management II (CCAF) This is an example of the commonly transferred CLEP / military credit. This in no way is an exhaustive list of the acceptable courses, military, and test credit applicable to this major as the possibilities are endless. For an in depth look at the acceptable CLEP/DANTES examinations accepted by Wayland please refer to the CLEP & DANTES score sheets available from the BAS/BCM office. If you have a specific question about a military or college level course, always ask your evaluator for their opinion.
11
Common Mistakes: Transferring in Lower Level credit hours and not adjusting the number of required Upper Level credit hours. Transferring in courses from another institution that have not been approved through the University’s courses evaluated or by the evaluator. Allowing students to take courses without the proper prerequisite or in an incorrect order. Not advising students of the proper sequence in their class rotation. (i.e. Taking RSWR 3345 at the beginning of their degree) This is a list of some common mistakes made by the advisor and the student.

Summary Review: This training module focused on the Management major. At its conclusion, the user should know the core, the specializations available, and the professional development requirements. Advisors should be able to explain the major and its components to interested students and counsel them appropriately based upon the University’s governance. As a result of this training module you should have a deeper understanding of the Management major within the BAS degree.
