Rapid population ageing is a major challenge for EU regions. It also represents a huge opportunity of new growth and jobs as the silver economy is estimated to achieve a 15 trillion USD volume by globally. The predictions evidence the fact that in 2060 almost 53% of EU population will be of 65+ years and, in the same year, 9% of EU GDP will represent health & social care expenditure. Due to this phenomenon at regional level is estimated a shortage up to 2 million health workers until 2020.

A developed market of goods and services for active and healthy ageing would have significant impact on the efficiency of health and social care systems, potentially also increasing their sustainability. Scaling up of tele care and tele health at EU regions to reach a high coverage of the population affected by chronic diseases could generate markets for new products & services of 1020 billion euro per year. The development of the silver economy may also bring important job opportunities in related sectors, particularly in health and social services.
