Carbon Not that big of a deal…it’s only the element that all of life on Earth depends on
2
What is Carbon? Carbon is the one special element that ALL OF EARTH DEPENDS ON. It is almost every biological compound that makes up our bodies. The air that you breathe out is a form of carbon called Carbon Dioxide. Carbon has been around for thousands of years but was never discovered under the name “Carbon” it was discovered in the form of charcoal Charcoal is a carbon compound that stores a lot of energy and is a good conductor of heat. This is why it is used for charcoal Carbon can also be in plants. All plants consist of Carbon and is the most important element of a plant. Without Carbon plants would not be here today. This means that all animals on earth need carbon to survive. Animals depend on plants for nutrition as well and without carbon these animals would not exist today. Take a look at your pencil. The dark grey powdery but hard material at the end is another form of carbon called graphite. The material that pencils used to be made of is another element called lead which was discontinued. This is because students were chewing the lead and dying because it was poisonous. The most hard substance to split is made up of Carbon! You know and love this substance because it also is one of the most shiny substances in he universe. You got it, It is Diamond. Diamond is formed when carbon is left in a very high pressured area. The atom is compressed very harshly to form a crystal called Diamond. Carbon can also be in the form of many petroleum made products. Carbon is the most important part of gasoline which we all use in every day life. Gasoline is made from a substance called oil and oil is created from plants that have died millions of years ago and we all know that carbon is in plants and plants have carbon, Therefore, Gasoline is made up of Carbon. Finally, Carbon is found in the form of a plastic. I just talked about gasoline. Just like gasoline, plastic is made from oil. This means that Plastics consists of mainly carbon. A French Scientist named Antoine Lavoisier showed that diamonds are a form of carbon in 1772.

Where is Carbon on the Periodic Table?
(After all there are 115 found elements) Carbon is the sixth element on the periodic table in between Boron (B) and Nitrogen (N). Carbon is a very stable element. Because it is so stable, it can be found both by itself and in many naturally formed compounds. Scientists have described the three most common states of carbon as Diamond, Amorphous, and graphite. Like I said in the previous slide, this is the same carbon/Graphite found in Pencils. Carbon has a chemical symbol of C. It has an atomic number of 6. The atomic number is the same as the amount of electrons in the atom which means that an atom of carbon has 6 electrons. The Number of electrons is the same as the number of protons in the nucleus, so therefore the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of carbon is 6. The atomic mass of an atom of carbon is 12 (12.01 because of isotopes). The atomic mass is the weighed average of the atom altogether. The abbreviated term for atomic mass is amu which is short for atomic mass unit. Carbon is in Group 14, period 2 on the Periodic Table.

What if Carbon disappeared forever?
Many things would go wrong if the element carbon disappeared. If carbon disappeared plants would not exist. There are so many things on earth that depend on plants such as humans and animals. If carbon were to go missing there would be no trees and without trees we would all die because there would be no oxygen. Carbon is also just used in everyday life. Carbon is used for graphite in pencils and that would not be very good if we had to go back to using lead pencils. Petroleum products such as gasoline would not exist if carbon went missing. Gasoline is Very important in this world and is very expensive. Gasoline keeps our cars going and takes us places. Every human being in the world would die if Carbon did not exist. Carbon is almost every biological compound that makes up our bodies, cells, organelles, and organs. Without carbon we would die because our organs would not work correctly and the outcome would not be good. Basically, all life on earth would die if it were not for carbon. We all know that plants need carbon to survive. There are many animals in our universe that rely on plants for nutrition and to stay alive. If plants did not exist all animals that feed on plants would not exist anymore because they would not get the right nutrition to stay alive. The world runs on carbon, whether its from plastic bottles, to diamonds, to gasoline, to charcoal, or even just pencils. Carbon is one of the most important element to the survival of every living organism in the universe.
