1 Assessing Reading Ningtyas Orilina A, M.Pd

2 1. Definition Grellet (1981:7) reading is defined as a construct process of guessing and an active process of deriving meaning. Nuttal (1985:1) states that reading means getting out of the text as nearly as possible to the message that the writer put into it. Haris (1980: 447) states that reading is meaningful interpretation of printed or written symbols. Reading in this process is the result of the interaction between the perception of graphic symbols that represent language and reader’s language skill and knowledge of the world.

3 Continue... Nunan (2003: 68) reading is a fluent process of readers combining information from a text and their own background knowledge to build meaning. Grabe and Stoller (2002: -10) propose that reading is the ability to draw meaning from the printed page and interpret this information appropriately. Petty (1980: ) Reading is a complex process to get information from the written text in which the ability to pronounce and comprehend the written text is needed to interpret sign, letters, or symbol by assigning meaning in receiving ideas and intuition from the author via printed word.
