3 Tonight’s Topic Using Virtual Machines to Test/Demo BI Tools
Looking for a way to test out new BI tools without messing up your computer with betas or software that you may not use again? Virtual Machine technology has become much easier to use over the years and is even available for free. See how you can use VMs to make this work easier and how to do it all for free and even on your laptop (Windows or Mac)!

9 Virtual Machines Virtual Machines (VM) Defined
Ability to run another “computer” within your laptop or desktop VM is usually referred to as the Guest Laptop or Desktop you are running the VM software on is the Host Requires specialized software to control the VMs and make sure it does not effect the host computer in any way All hardware in guest is virtualized and appears to the guest as if it is running on a full computer Still requires licenses for Operating System and software running in guest, but it is possible to use evaluation versions to save costs Uses more resources on host computer since some of the CPU and Memory have to be reserved by guest VM to be virtualized Host computer support of virtualization extensions in firmware is required for some VM software (VT-x on Intel) especially for 64bit support in guest Virtual Machines

10 VM Software Windows MacOS Linux
Microsoft Hyper-V – Built into Windows (including Server), but only available in some licenses and must be setup in Windows Features Oracle VirtualBox – Free software from Oracle VMWare Server/Workstation – Enterprise level Virtual Machine support MacOS Oracle VirtualBox – Same free software from Oracle VMWare Fusion – Integrates VMs into MacOS Parallels – Deep integration into MacOS even for Windows as the guest Linux Oracle VirtualBox Others? VM Software

11 Take advantage of snapshots to allow for reset of VM back to that point in time
Use dynamic sizing of VM HDD to save on local storage, but make sure to keep enough free on host HDD for the full space Don’t allocate too many resources to guest VM, can make entire system unstable Depending on your host computer you may be able to run multiple VMs Create a VM with just the OS and tools you will always need installed, then clone/copy that VM to make new VMs with SQL Server, etc. for evaluation/testing Backup your VMs! Watch out for licensing restrictions VM Helpful Hints
