Victorian Children school and games played.
By Beth and Abigail.
2
School time Not a lot of children could go to school because their families were too poor to pay the fees. Most of their time at school was spent doing handwriting! Everyone was forced to write with their right hand so some children had very, very messy handwriting! All the children had to sit in rows and nobody was allowed to speak.

Lessons. Girls learned how to sew while the boys did English. Instead of P.E they did drill which is exercise next to their desks or benches. Boys didn’t have to learn to sew because it was classed as a girls job. If someone didn’t do something right in their work they would get a lashing from their class teacher o r the head teacher.

Ragged School The first ragged school was opened by Dr Banardo for families that couldn’t pay the fees to a normal school in the Victorian times. It taught everything a normal school did but didn’t whip or shout at the children when they did something wrong.
5
Toys. Poor children mad e their own toys out of string, pegs ,sticks and bits of material. The other children played with toys like spinning tops, dolls , soldiers, tea sets and a hoop game. Some children still play with these toys today and they are known as traditional toys.

Classroom layout In Victorian classrooms the layout was pretty different to the 21st Century classroom. Their displays were very dull with no colour on them, everything was black and white. Instead of a electric smart board they had a chalk board that was used for all subjects. Most of the displays were maps or things saying God is love , God is just , God is love. Their desks were in rows so no one could mess around with anyonelse.

Behaviour The children had to behave very well otherwise there would be lots of consequences. One of these would be a lashing from their teacher , lots of the children were very scared about this. The teachers would also put Dunce’s hat on and made you stand in a corner while everyone laughed at you.

Games The children played lots of games together. They played skipping games , running games , marbles and they also made their own games up. People still play these games now and are still enjoyed all the same.
