55 Loving Your Neighbor I Thessalonians 4:9-12

56 I Thessalonians 4:9-12 9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.

57 RESPONSIBILITY TO THE BRETHREN
The command to love “the brethren” is clear in Scripture.

58 Hebrews 13:1 1 Let love of the brethren continue.

59 I Peter 1:22; 2:17 1:22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, 2:17 Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.

60 I John 3:14, 17-18 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. … 17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

61 RESPONSIBILITY TO THE BRETHREN
The command to love “the brethren” is clear in Scripture. Paul’s readers practiced this – throughout Macedonia. The challenge: To do more!

62 I Thessalonians 4:1 1 Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more.

63 II Thessalonians 1:3 3 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater;

64 Galatians 5:13 13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

65 We Show Love By … Addressing physical needs.
Bearing one another’s burdens. Offering encouragement. Shepherding or teaching.

66 RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example.

67 Matthew 5:14-16 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

68 I Timothy 3:7 7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

69 RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example. There is likely a specific issue under consideration here – Anticipated Parousia Frenzy

70 II Thessalonians 3:10-12 10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.

71 Three Problems with Their Behavior
Sets a bad example of laziness (sloth) Others have to support them/family

72 Ephesians 4:28 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

73 Three Problems with Their Behavior
Sets a bad example of laziness (sloth) Others have to support them/family They turn into busybodies

74 I Timothy 5:13 13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.

75 RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example. There is likely a specific issue under consideration here. What does the world see in us?

76 WHAT DO THEY SEE IN US ? At work or school? On the highway?
At the ballgame? In the restaurant (after worship)? At home?
